The Hellespont Alhambra, later known as TI Asia, is an ultra-large crude carrier (ULCC) built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering in South Korea. Delivered in March 2002, it was the first of four ULCCs commissioned by Hellespont Shipping Corporation.
The ship has a deadweight tonnage of 441,893 tons, a length overall of 380 meters, and a beam (width) of 68 meters. Its draft measures 24.5 meters, and it can carry up to 3.2 million barrels of crude oil. The vessel is powered by an HSD-Sulzer 9RTA84T-D engine, which produces 36,900 kW at 76 RPM, allowing it to achieve a service speed of 16.5 knots when laden and 17.5 knots in ballast.
Classified by both Lloyd’s Register (LR) and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), the Hellespont Alhambra features double hull construction for enhanced safety. The ballast tanks are inerted to reduce corrosion, and a unique white paint system above the waterline helps reflect sunlight, keeping the cargo cooler and reducing hydrocarbon emissions.
