Public Hearing on the Draft Announcement of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Regarding the Designation of Khao Lak Underwater Learning Park as a Marine and Coastal Resource Protection Area 📄📊

👨‍💼 Mr. Sirithorn Buakaew, Mayor of Khuk Khak Subdistrict Municipality, participated in the public hearing on the draft announcement of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment regarding the designation of Khao Lak Underwater Learning Park as a marine and coastal resource protection area. Also present were Dr. Jaturong Kongkaew, Lecturer in Marine Science and Coastal Management, Deputy Dean for Administration and Human Resources, Prince of Songkla University, Phuket Campus; Mr. Sompong Daopiset, President of the Phang Nga Hotel Association; the Director of the Marine Resources Division; the Director of the Marine and Coastal Resources Office Region 6 (Phang Nga); along with executives, members of the Khuk Khak Subdistrict Municipal Council, government officials, and relevant personnel. 📌 The meeting was held at the Khuk Khak Subdistrict Municipality Meeting Room, Takua Pa District, Phang Nga Province.

During the meeting, the background, concept, and key aspects of the draft were presented. Listen to opinions and suggestions from participants and summarize the results of the consultation in order to conserve, protect, and restore marine and coastal resources in the area, maintaining their natural state, a complete environment and ecosystem, and maximizing benefits for the public. 💼📊

A rare and encouraging sighting from the Sustainable Khao Lak Network community today.

This morning, a dugong was observed in the Khao Na Yak area, swimming in shallow water (approximately 1–2 metres deep) and appearing to feed on seagrass.

The video was originally shared by Discovery Travel, whose team and guests were fortunate to witness this special moment.

Dugongs are a vulnerable species and depend on healthy seagrass ecosystems to survive. Sightings like this in the wider Khao Lak area are uncommon, and may reflect the importance of protecting and restoring our coastal habitats.

This is a positive reminder of why ongoing efforts in responsible tourism, habitat protection, and community collaboration matter. Healthy ecosystems support biodiversity — and moments like this show what is possible when those systems are given the chance to recover.

We encourage all operators and visitors to continue respecting marine wildlife: observe from a distance, avoid disturbance, and help protect these fragile environments for the future.

What makes Khao Lak so special? We'd love to hear your thoughts.

As part of the ongoing conversations around sustainable tourism in Khao Lak, we’re gathering some feedback from people who live here, visit regularly, or are planning a trip.

The aim is simply to better understand what people value most about Khao Lak, what makes it special, and how we can protect those things as the destination continues to evolve.

We’re also interested in hearing thoughts on how Khao Lak could improve over time.

A short survey in Thai and English has been created to gather these insights and it takes about 2–5 minutes to complete.

Today we celebrate one of the ocean’s quiet heroes, seagrass. As it’s world seagrass day!

It may not be as famous as coral reefs or as photogenic as mangroves, but without seagrass our marine ecosystem simply wouldn’t survive.

Seagrass is a critical nursery ground for marine life.
It stabilises the seabed and protects our coastline.
It absorbs carbon up to 35 times faster than tropical forests.
And most importantly for us, it is a vital food source for sea turtles.

Here in Khao Lak Phang Nga, our seagrass meadows directly support species like the green turtle and countless other marine animals that make this coastline so special.

When we protect seagrass, we protect turtles, fish stocks, coastal communities and our climate.

Seagrass is not just grass in the sea. It is the foundation of a healthy Andaman ecosystem.

As a Sustainable Khao Lak network, we are committed to promoting responsible tourism, protecting marine habitats and supporting conservation efforts that safeguard our natural environment for future generations.

Avoid anchoring in seagrass beds.
Choose responsible tour operators.
Never feed the wildlife
Never litter.
Respect marine wildlife.

Healthy oceans start with awareness. Today is a reminder that even the most unassuming ecosystems are vital.

This is exactly why it is not a good idea to feed wildlife. Feeding wild animals including monkeys, turtles, and fish, or even stray cats and dogs, encourages closer contact with humans. Contact between animals and humans can result in injury to both people and animals. It can also spread disease. Wild and stray animals have not been vaccinated against common diseases and can easily be infected by contact with humans. Equally many carry diseases that can infected humans such as rabies and herpatitis.

While cute animal photos are fun when on holiday, it is important to remember the risks and long term impact. Animals that have been fed will often return looking for more. Quickly becoming a pest and a danger for local people.

When visiting wildlife please watch from a safe distance. Never try to offer food or encourage interaction, even to get the perfect photo. If your guide starts to feed the animals, or encourages you to do so, please tell them you would prefer to see the animals behaving naturally.

German influencer Julia Willecke, known as "Julia Beautx," was bitten by a monkey during a solo trip to Krabi, Thailand. The incident occurred on a beach trail when several macaques approached her, resulting in a bite to her calf.

Willecke sought immediate medical attention at a local hospital following the attack. She received vaccinations and antibiotics as a precautionary measure against potential infection before being discharged shortly after treatment.

The content creator confirmed she sustained no lasting injuries and has since completed her travel itinerary. Local authorities continue to advise tourists to maintain a safe distance from wildlife in popular coastal areas.
