I have had an incredible 4 weeks in Thailand through the country's most iconic landscapes and cultural treasures.

Starting in the bustling metropolis of Bangkok, I have experienced the energy of Thailand’s capital with its vibrant street life, majestic temples, and endless markets.

In Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, I delved into northern Thailand’s rich culture, exploring ancient temples, the elephant sanctuary, vibrant night bazaars, and the stunning White Temple.

Moving onto Sukothai’s historic ruins transported me back to the kingdom’s ancient past, while Ayutthaya's grand temples spoke of its royal legacy.

A visit to the famous Bridge over the River Kwai in Kanchanaburi brought a poignant reflection on history.

In between all of this I also relaxed on the beaches of Krabi, soaking in Thailand’s tropical paradise, completing a memorable and diverse adventure.

Bye bye Thailand it been a blast. Thank you to my travelling companions Thornicroft and Georgette Harrison - we’ve made some fantastic memories that will remain with me forever.

To all of my friends and family who have kept up with my travels over the past 4 weeks - thank you.

Until the next adventure - over and out ###

On my last full day in Thailand I visited the Bridge over the River Kwai and rode the Death Railway in Kanchanaburi. I was struck by the history and beauty surrounding this iconic site.

Built during World War II by Allied prisoners of war under harsh conditions, the bridge and railway has become a powerful symbol of resilience and sacrifice.

Walking across the bridge and riding the railway, I could see the peaceful waters of the River Kwai flowing below, a stark contrast to the grim history it witnessed decades ago.

Nearby, I explored the JEATH War Museum, which preserves artifacts, photographs, and stories from those who lived through this dark period.

The entire experience was both humbling and enlightening, reminding me of the cost of war and the strength of the human spirit.

Standing there, I felt a deep respect for those who endured so much in such a beautiful yet somber place.

During my visit to Ayutthaya, I was transported back in time to an era of ancient splendor. The towering ruins and Buddha statues, worn yet dignified, stood as reminders of the city’s past as the thriving Siamese capital. Wandering through Wat Mahathat, I marveled at the famous Buddha head entwined in tree roots, a mysterious and awe-inspiring sight. The Chao Phraya River, winding gently around the historic island, added a serene atmosphere to the temple ruins. I enjoyed a peaceful boat ride at sunset, watching the golden light reflect off the centuries-old temples. The experience was a captivating blend of history, culture, and natural beauty that I'll never forget.

Now back in Bangkok and off to see the Bridge over the River Kwai and the Death Railway tomorrow before my flight back to London on Friday.

Bye, bye Sukhothai - an amazing city with so much history. Thank you for the friendliness and memories. I’ve posted a few photographs of our time in Sukhothai - we were very lucky to see the Loy Krathong Festival..

Now on the bus on our way to Ayutthaya.

Ayutthaya, founded in 1351, was a historic kingdom and capital city in what is now Thailand. Located on an island at the confluence of three rivers, the Chao Phraya, Lopburi, and Pa Sak, it became one of the world's largest and most cosmopolitan urban areas by the 17th century, drawing influence from across Asia and Europe. Known for its grandeur, Ayutthaya was home to stunning temples, palaces, and an advanced trade network. In 1767, the city was devastated by Burmese invaders, which led to its decline and eventual abandonment. Today, Ayutthaya's impressive ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting visitors with glimpses of its former glory and rich cultural heritage.

Looking forward to exploring it..although I do now think I am seriously ‘Templed’ out!!

After an 8 hour coach journey we arrived in Sukhothai safely,

Sukhothai is a city known as the cradle of Thai civilization. Established in the 13th century, it was the capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom, widely considered the birthplace of Thai art, architecture, and culture.

The city is famed for its distinctive style of Buddha images, graceful temple structures, and the introduction of the Thai alphabet by King Ramkhamhaeng.

Today, the Sukhothai Historical Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and preserves many of its ancient temples, statues, and relics..

We have been very lucky because we have arrived in the middle of the Loy Karthong festival which is held in the Sukhothai Historical Park on the full moon of the twelfth lunar month (usually in November).

It is a traditional Thai festival where people release floating lanterns (krathongs) on water as a gesture of gratitude to the water goddess and to symbolize letting go of negativity. We have seen some beautiful .

We made it to Chiang Rai, known for its serene landscapes, rich history, and vibrant art scene. It was Founded in the 13th century as part of the Lanna Kingdom and served as a key cultural and political center. Today, Chiang Rai is celebrated for its unique and contemporary temples, such as the striking White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) and the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten) which we will be visiting tomorrow.

We are here until Saturday and then off to Sukhothai, often regarded as Thailand's first capital. It was the center of a thriving kingdom in the 13th and 14th centuries and is known for its distinctive architecture and art. It will take about 6 hours to get there by coach.

Such a shame it raining so heavily- hoping for a better day tomorrow.

We found a great place for coffee..

Visited the Golden Buddha who was green wrapped due to maintenance !! and the Artists house where keen artists gather to create.. Took a Tuktuk from the Grand Palace back to the Shangri La (next post - very funny!)

Went to the Sky Bar and saw an amazing view over Bangkok - however £23 for a glass of wine is a bit much for even London prices.

Had dinner at the Charmkrung - absolutely amazing food this restaurant is a hidden gem.

On our way to Chiang Mai tomorrow on the overnight train - should be an experience!!
