🏮 Loi Krathong / Yipeng - The 2019 official program!
We have always been reluctant to quickly disclose the program of the Festival of Lights here in Chiang Mai. And this is for a very good reason: the official programme does not cover by far all the activities organised during this magnificent festival, the most beautiful that can be admired in the Rose of the North. Here is the official program of the Festival of Lights 2019 in Chiang Mai.
Allow us to draw your attention to a few important points. This is the official program and many of the side events are not mentioned! First of all, the very beautiful ceremony of the lanterns' release by the moinillons of Wat Phan Tao. Or the festivities organized by the Night Bazaar merchants (the arrival point of the first procession, Sunday evening). Another shortcoming: nothing is said about the giant releases of sky lanterns....
Many other places will be specially animated for the Loi Krathong. One thinks here of the Ancient House, for example, located on the banks of the Ping River (festivities from November 10th to 12th, 2019), especially since this former Lanna house has just been restored. Outside the city, the Royal Flora also organizes its Yipeng evening (but elsewhere). There is also The River Market which is under attack. In addition, the official program does not say anything about the workshops you will be able to attend, such as the one that was very successful last year at Lanna Rice Barn where you left with your krathong made with your own hands. And finally, restaurateurs are still refining their menus on this occasion. You will have understood it: the celebration is spread over many parts of the city (we told you yesterday where the various festivities are taking place, referring you to an interactive map of the various activities that could be very useful).
PROHIBITIONS. The release of sky lanterns can only be done on Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th November 2019, from 7pm to 1am. Several areas are prohibited.
As you know, the sky lanterns released into the sky... once the fire of the lanterns has been consumed, they fall back, causing major damage: disruption of aerial flights, outbreaks of fires and pollution of nature (as well as the immense surface of the zoo, which unfortunately receives a lot of this waste from the sky, disturbing animals, especially pandas) ! That is why the Governor of the province has issued very strict guidelines: lantern releases can only take place on two evenings, Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th November 2019, from 7pm to 1am, in defined locations. So imitate the local population.
What can we learn from the programme of what is undoubtedly the most beautiful celebration to be experienced here in Chiang Mai?
◆ Cultural evening with a superb Lanna dance on Saturday, November 9th;
◆ Official opening ceremony the next day, Sunday, November 10th, with an evening parade. The procession will arrive at Pantip Plaza, crossing the Night Bazaar where the merchants will animate the place.
◆ Official day of the krathong deposit on Monday, November 11th;
◆ Ceremony of the Wat Phan Tao's young monks on Monday, November 11th, 2019, from 5pm;
◆ Big Yipeng parade in the evening of Tuesday, November 12th (officially without fireworks...), a parade that closed the festivities;
◆ Release of sky lanterns only allowed on Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th November 2019, from 7pm to 1am in the morning; no less than ten giant throws of sky lanterns on the program!
"Join the Chiang Mai Yipeng Festival while preserving the Lanna tradition and celebrate the festival without harmful firecrackers and alcohol" is the official slogan. An important detail as much as the Thais take into account the clothing: the population of Chiang Mai will appreciate seeing you dressed in traditional Lanna outfits during these festivities.
We wish you the most beautiful of the Festivals of Lights (Loi Krathong) and the coupled Festival of Lanterns (Yipeng) this 2019 year!
