The Red Lotus Sea in Udon Thani is one of those places that’s best experienced slowly and at the right time. For a few weeks each year, the lake fills with pink water lilies, transforming the landscape into something rare and quietly striking.

In our Thailand Beyond the Obvious journey, Udon Thani is not a standalone stop but part of a wider route that moves from Bangkok and Ayutthaya into Northeast Thailand, before continuing north to Chiang Mai. The visit to the Red Lotus Sea is timed for the season, paired with unhurried mornings, local food, and space to observe rather than rush through.

This is slow travel through heritage, community, and cuisine, designed for travellers who prefer depth over highlights.

When I started planning my visit to the Singing Sands Festival, I somehow knew, deep down, that I would return enriched in more ways than I could count. Now, having lived the experience, I carry back a bagful of memories that keep calling me back for more.

Two days since my return, the experience lingers. I can still hear the sweet sound of folk music, picture the spectacular settings where performances came alive against centuries-old walls and starlit courtyards, and feel the stories that linger in Dundlod’s timeless architecture.

What moved me most was being in the presence of extraordinary artists — masters of their craft, yet so grounded and full of warmth. Watching them perform up close, seeing their love for the art and how effortlessly they drew us into their world, was nothing short of humbling.

Rajasthan has many faces, but to witness it come alive within the intimate setting of Dundlod Fort was unforgettable. The fort wasn’t just a backdrop; it was part of the story, part of the music itself. As Vinod ji, the festival director, beautifully said “we don’t come as participants, we come as custodians of our nation’s heritage — here to honour the artists who carry its legacy forward.”

They say sometimes words fail you, that is exactly how I feel after spending two days at the Singing Sands Festival. It’s beyond description, a feeling that has taken hold of me, and I find myself longing to return year after year to relive the magic all over again.

A heartfelt thank you to the Singing Sands team for creating a truly rustic festival, and to the Royal family of Dundlod for generously opening their home to host us over these two unforgettable days.
