SEMC started with only 3 Hitachi excavators, 1 Bulldozer and 12 employees at that time, it has grown to become the most recognized Heavy Equipment Contracting Company in Suriname with a workforce of more than 400 employees. SEMC mainly concentrated its activities on the mining sector which at that time, started to show some new opportunities in the Gold sector (Golden Star Resources at Gross Roseb
el and Lawa Antino). Also in the Bauxite mining sector (Billiton and Suralco), SEMC established itself as a reliable contracting company for heavy equipment. Important projects from that time on are; the hauling of bauxite from the mines at Lelydorp 3 (BHP-Billiton), Coermotibo (previous managed by Suralco) and currently from the Klaverblad mines for BHP-Billiton. From 2002 on heavy Earthmoving (Articulated Dump Trucks) has become an important part of our services, which perfectly complies with our companyโs strategy to further broaden our mining and construction services, ranging from Bush Clearing, Road construction to Overburden stripping and Mining. In August 2007 the Overburden stripping project (approximate 3.500.000 m3) of the Kaaimangrasie and Klaverblad mines was awarded to SEMC. From 2003 on SEMC was also strongly involved in the exploration activities of BHP-Billiton in West Suriname (Bakhuys). These activities include bush clearing, road (and bridge) construction, and assisting at drill works. During the construction phase of the Rosebel Goldmines (Iam Gold), SEMC also was an important contractor for heavy equipment and trucks. Other exploration projects where SEMC is currently involved as the sole heavy equipment contractor are; Newmont Gold - Nassau project and the Lawa Antino (Gold) exploration activities for Reunion Gold. At these projects the main activities are Bush Clearing and Road construction. For the Suralco we are currently involved in the expansion of the mud lakes (dike building), as a heavy equipment contractor at their Paranam plant. From July 2009 SEMC is also in charge (after international tender) of full mining at all current Suralco (previous BHP-Billiton mines) at their Successor Bauxite mines at Klaverblad, Kaaimangrasie and Caramacca. From May 2005 on Suriname Earth Moving Contractors is officially certified for ISO 9001, OHSAS 18001 (safety) and from may 2010 on also ISO 14001 (environment).
