⚓ 𝗛𝗨𝗦𝗞𝗬: 𝗔 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗽

Known for endurance, hardiness and teamwork, the husky is a fitting name for an MR tanker serving the demanding product and chemical trades.

On 16 July, HUSKY, a 50,000 DWT oil and chemical tanker, was delivered and sailed for Singapore to begin her working life under Synergy’s technical management, joining the world’s largest third-party-managed tanker fleet.

She is the sixteenth of eighteen vessels in a newbuilding programme supported by Synergy’s newbuilding and site teams. HUSKY will operate under the Synergy Pacific DOC, with shore support from colleagues in Pune.

From construction, testing and sea trials to operational management, continuity matters. In chemical tanker operations, disciplined tank preparation, cargo segregation and precision from loading through to final discharge are fundamental.

“This trust took thirteen years to build. It can be tested in a single watch.”

That was the message from Ajay Kumar Chaudhry, Co-CEO – Ship Management, at the Synergy Onyx Crew Safety Seminar in Pune. ⚓

The deliberately focused gathering brought together 30 seafarers, representatives from MOL and colleagues from Synergy’s Marine, Technical, HSQE and Crewing teams.

With the owner in the room and time for direct discussion, participants examined operational case studies, questioned established practices and explored what safer, more reliable operations require every day.

“The calls that concern me are the calls that never come,” Ajay said. “A concern raised early is one we solve together.”

Capt. Devender Joshi, General Manager at MOL, shared the owner’s perspective on the Master’s responsibility for vessel safety, the importance of thorough inspections and the need for factual, timely reporting.

Uday Kumar, Deputy General Manager at MOL, led discussions on VLSFO and LSMGO handling, fuel treatment and machinery vibration monitoring, highlighting the value of identifying developing defects while there is still time to act. 🔧

Maneesh Pradhan, Managing Director and Global Head of Crewing, called for a shift:

➡️ From reactive maintenance to preventive and predictive thinking
➡️ From reliance on individuals to reliable systems

He framed operational excellence through four ideas: competence, culture, cause and consistency.

A seminar does not improve safety on its own. Its value lies in honest exchange, careful reflection and the actions people carry back to their vessels and teams.

𝗣𝗨𝗦𝗔𝗞𝗔 𝗝𝗔𝗬𝗔 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗲𝘁 ⚓🚢

PUSAKA JAYA, a 115,000 DWT-class aframax built this year by Tsuneishi Shipbuilding in Hiroshima, is a good example of how modern tanker design continues to evolve.

Her principal dimensions broadly match the earlier 2018 sister series, including vessels managed by Synergy, but she carries around 7,000 tonnes more cargo. That improvement comes through a combination of structural weight savings, cleaner hull form, better use of cargo space and fuel-saving features built into the design.

One of these is MT-FAST, which uses fins fitted ahead of the propeller to recover energy otherwise lost from rotational flow. The vessel also needs less engine power at comparable service speeds, supporting EEDI compliance.

For all the design work that goes into them, aframaxes earn their place through what they do. They move crude on routes and into ports where larger tankers may face restrictions, and remain among the hardest-working ships in the trade.

Indian women seafarers have gone from 1,599 in 2021 to 7,033 today — a 340% increase in five years. Yet women still account for less than 2% of India's seafarer workforce.

A feature in The Times of India this week brings those two realities together with balance and nuance. Through the voices of pioneers, cadets, regulators, unions and shipping companies, it is one of the more rounded accounts of the subject we have seen in the mainstream media.

Among those featured are two Synergy seafarers – Fifth Engineer Hifa Salim, whose award-winning essay inspired the opening of the story, and Engine Cadet Anushka Rudola, whose experience offers an honest perspective on the challenges and resilience required to build a life at sea.

Our Managing Director & Global Head of Crewing, Maneesh Pradhan, spoke candidly about one of the profession's biggest challenges:
"The hardest part is often not the ship, it is the surroundings. A cadet may be the only woman on board, far from home, in a profession her own community barely understands. Isolation, not capability, is the real risk."

He also highlighted the challenge that will define real progress:
"Getting a woman to sea was the first task. Making it possible for her to stay through the seasons of her life, including motherhood, is the one that will truly show whether we have succeeded."

The industry rightly celebrates every woman who joins a ship. The more difficult challenge is ensuring she still wants to be there ten or twenty years later.

✂️ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝘂𝘁. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀.

Steel cutting for the first of MPC Container Ships’ new 1,600 TEU high-cube feeders took place at Fujian Mawei Shipyard’s Guanhai base on 15 July 2026.

Synergy has been appointed to provide newbuilding project management for the series, supporting the project through design and plan review, construction supervision, material and workmanship inspection, commissioning, sea trials and delivery.

The ceremony itself was brief, but most of the work it begins goes unseen: material identification and traceability, plate nesting, cutting accuracy and edge preparation. The discipline established at this stage carries forward into fit-up, welding and block assembly, shaping the vessel that its future crew will operate and maintain. ⚓

On 20 July, YM WAYFINDER made her maiden call at PSA Singapore.

The Singapore-flagged LNG dual-fuel containership is managed by Synergy Marine Group. Her arrival brought together representatives from Yang Ming, PSA and Synergy, including Jesper Kristensen, Group CEO, and Ajay Chaudhry, Co-CEO Ship Management.
During the quayside ceremony, Captain Mridul Upadhyay received a commemorative maiden-call plaque on behalf of the vessel and her crew. 🛳️

Jesper and Ajay then spent time with the officers and crew on the bridge, in the engine room, mess room and galley.

Ship management is, in the end, a business of trust. For our customers and those they serve, the experience of Synergy is felt most directly on board, in how a vessel is run, how a port call is handled and how care is taken in the small decisions of a working day at sea.

That trust carries responsibility. It is honoured through constant care and sound judgement, and through the professionalism to seek guidance whenever there is doubt.

The tenth edition of the Synergy Marine Group Seafarer Contest received around 1,000 photographs, videos and essays from seafarers across some 400 vessels, together forming a visual and written record of contemporary life at sea.

Safety at sea is built through leadership, teamwork, preparation and the willingness to keep learning. ⚓

This year’s Maritime Partners in Safety Leadership Conference, held at Allianz Stadium Twickenham under the theme“𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆: 𝗨𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲”, explored how strong safety culture supports better operational performance.

The discussions focused on practical improvement, learning from incidents, and applying those lessons where they matter most, onboard and ashore. 🚢

A central reference point was Formula 1, where major advances in safety have been achieved while maintaining high levels of performance and competitiveness. It was a useful reminder that safety and performance should not be seen as separate goals.

For 2026, the programme’s operational focus areas include enclosed-space entry, mooring operations, falls to water and simultaneous operations. These are high-risk areas where planning, communication, teamwork and discipline can make a real difference. 🦺

Peter Hawkin, attending on behalf of Synergy, said:
“As an industry with a shared responsibility for safety at sea, collaboration and open exchange are essential. The conference provides an important platform for this. It also reflects the year-round efforts of the Shell MPIS team in making practical safety resources freely available to the industry.”

🎓 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲

Last week, Vikas Trivedi, Co-CEO, Ship Management at Synergy Marine Group, was conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) by AMET University at its Special Convocation 2026.

AMET University recognised Vikas for his contribution to the global maritime industry, his leadership in advancing operational excellence and innovation, and his sustained commitment to developing maritime talent.

As shipping continues to evolve, preparing skilled, adaptable and safety-focused maritime professionals remains essential to the future of our industry. ⚓

Accepting the honour, Vikas said:
"I am deeply grateful to AMET University for this honour. From Erling Haaland inspiring Norway's remarkable FIFA World Cup journey to Novak Djokovic once again showing why he's one of the greatest to ever play the game at Wimbledon, sport has an incredible way of bringing people together.

Not long ago, being at sea often meant missing these global moments. Today, advances in maritime connectivity are helping bridge the gap between ship and shore.

It was wonderful to see our seagoing colleagues enjoying the action together through live streaming while at sea. 📺⚓ These moments may seem simple, but they strengthen camaraderie, boost morale and remind us that home is never quite as far away as it once was. ❤️

Connectivity across the global fleet continues to evolve, and while not every vessel enjoys the same level of access today, the future is heading in the right direction.

Hopefully, by the time football returns for the centenary FIFA World Cup in 2030, watching every match live from the middle of the ocean will simply be part of life at sea. 🌍
