Gemini Cooperation will suspend two Mediterranean-Saudi Arabia shuttle services in mid-May, adding to the list of routes halted last month due to the Middle East conflict, reported London's S&P Global.

The affected loops are the JED2/JD2 service calling at Tangier, Port Said East and Jeddah, and the JED3/JD3 service calling at Port Said East, Aqaba and Jeddah. Hapag-Lloyd said the move consolidates capacity into alternative services to maintain reliable coverage.

Maersk said cargo from the suspended shuttles will be shifted to the AE19/SE4 mainline service launched on 13 March. That route links Jeddah with Gemini's hubs at Damietta in Egypt and Tanger Med in Morocco, continuing to Asia with calls at Tanjung Pelepas, Shanghai, Ningbo and Busan.

The last sailings will be the 3,800 TEU Merkur Ocean on May 10 under the JED3/JD3 loop and the 5,470 TEU GSL Tinos on May 11 under the JED2/JD2 loop, the carriers said.

Hapag-Lloyd has extended emergency bunker fuel surcharges to cover levies imposed by third-party feeder and barge operators as oil prices surge due to the Middle East war, reports New York's Journal of Commerce.

The carrier said the new surcharges, ranging from US$50 to $150 per TEU, will apply immediately on cargo to and from selected Caribbean and South American locations, before being rolled out globally. They will be charged both at origin and destination.

Chief executive Rolf Habben Jansen said last month the war has raised operating costs by$40 million to $50 million per week. Hapag-Lloyd is the first carrier to announce such measures, while rivals including Maersk, MSC and CMA CGM have yet to confirm similar surcharges.

The new charges are separate from Hapag-Lloyd's standard emergency fuel surcharge, covering explicit costs passed on by feeder operators. The carrier said the surcharges will apply to trades not regulated by the US Federal Maritime Commission from 21 April 21, and from May 21 for FMC-regulated trades plus Ecuador and Colombia.

The Arbitration Court of the Murmansk Region has upheld Lavna Seaport LLC's EUR8.8 million (US$10.3 million) claim against Latvia's LNK Industries and Germany's Thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions, reports Saint Petersburg's PortNews.

The claim, filed in spring 2025, sought damages representing advance payments for equipment installation and supervision. The European contractors refused to fulfil obligations under signed contracts due to sanctions and failed to return the funds.

Thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions designs and maintains industrial facilities, while LNK Industries builds offshore infrastructure. Both companies denied responsibility, citing EU sanctions. They may appeal the ruling to the Thirteenth Court of Appeal in St Petersburg within one month.

Lavna Seaport's coal terminal in Murmansk Region began operations in March 2025, with the first shipment attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Since launch, the port has exported 1.4 million tonnes of coal and is 96 per cent complete.

Arctic shipping routes can cut sailing distances by up to 40 per cent between Asia and Europe or North America, but high insurance costs restrict them to niche cargo, reports Singapore's Insurance Asia.

A new Coface analysis said Arctic routes reduce distances by 20 to 40 per cent, yet insurers apply a 40 per cent surcharge on premiums due to risks from ice, remoteness and difficult operating conditions. By contrast, the Suez route carried a 0.07 per cent risk premium on vessel value before Red Sea attacks.

The cost gap means Arctic shipping is only competitive in limited markets. Coface said bulk cargo is most suited, with liquid bulk potentially saving 45 to 50 per cent on transport costs, while dry bulk may also benefit but less strongly.

The German Tanker Shipping Group has taken delivery of Seadevil, an ice-capable oil and chemical carrier built by Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry in China, reports Melbourne's Baird Maritime.

Seadevil is the first in a series of six MR tankers ordered by GTS, designed by Sweden's FKAB Marine Design for global operations with high standards of safety and reliability. The vessel measures 199 metres in length, 32 metres in beam and has a deadweight of about 41,000.

The ship features an optimised hull form with FKAB's patented bow design, reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Its cargo system includes 12 independent tanks and two slop tanks, allowing simultaneous handling of up to 14 cargo types in compliance with OCIMF and IBC Code standards.

Propulsion is provided by a controllable-pitch propeller system, a 6,000kW MAN medium-speed main engine, shaft generator and a 402kWh battery pack. The configuration enables over 10 per cent efficiency gains and smooth transitions between ice navigation and open-water sailing.

Analysts said renewed military conflict involving Iran, Israel and the US has shattered hopes of a large-scale return of container shipping to the Red Sea in 2026. Xeneta's Peter Sand warned of further weaponisation of trade and prolonged disruption.

Gemini Cooperation confirmed it reversed its decision to re-route its ME11/IMX service via Suez, while Maersk cancelled plans to shift its MECL service through the canal. Both cited deteriorating security conditions around Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Hapag-Lloyd, Maersk's partner on the ME11/IMX service, also paused Trans-Suez sailings. CMA CGM suspended services via Suez, ordered Gulf vessels to shelter and re-routed traffic around the Cape of Good Hope. MSC issued similar instructions, halting bookings for the Middle East.
