Imam Ahmad bin Hambel on disagreement and flexibility.

A person came to Imam Ahmad Bin Hambel with a book written on difference of opinions between Islamic Scholars (Other Imams) on different religious issues. He gave name to the book ‘Kitab al Ikhtilaf’ (The Book of difference). Imam Hambel, without reading the book advised the person to change the name of the book from The book of differences to ‘Kitaab al Anthnaiya’ (The Book of flexibility).

Everyone has right to have different opinion on different issues. Now a days a difference of opinion transforms into an argument and in worse scenarios it goes into a physical conflicts. Greatness would have never been achieved without negotiations to avoid conflicts. In a civilised society disagreement is permissible, however confrontation should be deplored.

Below is an image of Kaaba from a magazine ‘The Sphere’ April 5, 1930; four sheds were built on opposite to the four walls of Kaaba for four different ‘school of thoughts’.
