If project cargo looks simple, that's usually a good sign.

What often goes unnoticed is everything that happens before the transport begins. Route assessments, lifting plans, handling methods, permits and coordination between everyone involved all need to come together before the cargo can move. By the time the operation starts, most of the critical decisions have already been made.

Welcome to SEAL Decoded, a series where we break down the concepts, terminology and common misconceptions behind international logistics.

"You said transit time is 30 days. It's been 30 days. Where is my shipment?" We hear this more often than you'd think.

In international freight forwarding, transit time and delivery time are not the same thing and the distinction is often overlooked.

In most international shipments, transit time refers to the time your cargo spends moving between the origin and destination. It does not include origin handling, customs clearance, destination handling or final delivery.

That's why the actual delivery time is typically longer than the quoted transit time.

When planning your next shipment, ask your freight forwarder for the full door-to-door delivery estimate. Transit time is just one piece of the overall timeline.

There's a moment during harvest season when everything accelerates. Grain is moving, decisions are fast and every hour counts.

A development that deserves the attention of every freight forwarder and customs intermediary in Europe.

According to CLECAT, customs authorities in some EU member states have pursued logistics operators for customs duties and VAT, even after transit procedures had been properly completed.

The concern is not about goods being lost in transit. The issue is that operators may be held liable for customs debts arising from incorrect information elsewhere in the supply chain, despite acting on the basis of data provided by their customers.

What makes this debate particularly relevant is that standard transport documents often state that cargo descriptions, contents, weights and values are declared by the shipper.

If responsibility continues to shift further down the logistics chain, the implications for freight forwarders, customs representatives and other intermediaries could be significant.

As discussions around EU customs reform continue, this is definitely one to watch.

Tensiunile din Orientul Mijlociu încep să se reflecte în fluxurile globale de marfă și în lanțurile de aprovizionare, în special pe coridoarele comerciale dintre Asia și Europa.

📌 Repere din piață:

⚓ Transport maritim

• Aproximativ 2 milioane TEU de marfă sunt afectate după perturbarea tranzitului prin Strâmtoarea Ormuz
• În prezent, datele indică aproximativ 3.200 de nave comerciale blocate sau în așteptare în zona Golfului Persic, dintre care aproximativ 170 sunt nave portcontainer
• Unele linii maritime au suspendat rezervările pe anumite rute din regiune
• Au fost introduse și suprataxe de risc, estimate în unele cazuri între 500 și 4.000 USD per container, în funcție de rută și tipul mărfii

✈️ Transport aerian

• Restricțiile de spațiu aerian au redus capacitatea globală de transport marfă cu aproximativ 18%
• Pe coridorul Asia–Europa, capacitatea a scăzut cu până la ~40% pe anumite rute
• Devierile pot adăuga 1–3 ore la durata zborurilor intercontinentale

📌 Recomandări:

• Planificarea expedierilor cu o marjă suplimentară de timp
• Monitorizarea modificărilor de program și capacitate pe rutele din regiune
• Verificarea actualizărilor operaționale comunicate de liniile maritime
• Evaluarea rutelor alternative acolo unde este posibil.

- Capacity secured within carrier cut-offs
- Shipping instructions and documents verified before submission
- Loading and handling requirements agreed in advance
