Vila Nova de Milfontes is a charming fishermen town, located along the western coast of Atlantic Ocean on the Northen margin of the Mira river, falling within the Nature Park of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast.
The Rota Vicentina enables wonderful hikkings in the area.
It is dominated by a large estary and ecosystem, and by the Mira river that gives shelter to several species of birds and marine life.
Its vast and beautiful deserted beaches like Malhao, Praia da Franquia, Furnas, Aivados, Ribeira da Aznha, Foz. (out of the summer time), crystal clear waters and golden dunes are the highlight of the region. In contrast to the beautiful coastal panorama, the interior landscape is markedly recognized by the typical Alentejo plains of cork oaks, among other species commonly observed in this region of the country.
Vila Nova de Milfontes was created in 1486, by King D. João II, in order to protect the trade routes from pirates. It is for this reason that one can find a fort – the castle of Vila Nova de Milfontes – in the center of the village, and that the architecture shows various influences.
