Today we have hit a historic milestone at Daydream Experience and for Sesimbra 🥹
𝘗𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘴, S***m Whale
***mwhale
For centuries, the s***m whale has been an economic resource, a source of livelihood and part of the identity of a community deeply connected to the sea. It has shaped professions and mobilised many people, vessels and skills that have left their mark on the social and maritime history of the town of Sesimbra, and beyond.
Today, that relationship is changing. What was once hunted is now admired and protected.
Every sighting of a s***m whale off the coast of mainland Portugal is a rare and extraordinary moment, reminding us of the richness of the marine biodiversity that still inhabits our waters
Although the species is found off the mainland coast, its oceanic nature and deep dives mean that such encounters are infrequent.
Learning about this past is not about celebrating the hunt, but about understanding the history of those who lived off the sea and recognising the journey we have taken towards a new way of viewing these giants: with respect, curiosity and responsibility.
The greatest treasure we can draw from the ocean today is the opportunity to preserve it, but above all, our survival on a planet that is showing increasing signs of strain.
