Day 7 - Aveiro e Praia de Miramar

Il viaggio verso il nord del Portogallo continua con due colorate e uniche tappe.
Aveiro, nello specifco Costa Nova nella prima foto, e Praia de Miramar.

Fun facts:
Conosciuta come la Venezia portoghese, Aveiro è composta da una laguna, alcune isolette e delle saline ed è solcata dai tipici Moliceiros, le imbarcazioni simili alle gondole utilizzate anticamente dai pescatori della zona.
Il nome Moliceiro deriva da un'alga, il moliço, che veniva raccolta dai pescatori che utilizzavano la caratteristica imbarcazione.
Si pensa che la Ca****la del Signore della Pietra fosse originariamente utilizzata per culti pagani e solo in seguito convertita in ca****la cristiana. Questa struttura veramente suggestiva che affaccia sull'oceano, è la destinazione in cui avviene il pellegrinaggio ogni anno la domenica della Santissima Trinità.

Day 5 - Faro e Tavira

La magica Faro è caratterizzata da una laguna che separa la terra ferma dal lembo che si affaccia sul mare. Tavira invece è una cittadella avvolta dalle mura di protezione.

Fun facts: Entrambe queste mete sono state coronate dall'incontro con la fauna del posto. Faro è la città delle cicogne, vedrete nidi su ogni camino, tetto, chiesa ed è meraviglioso sentirle cantare la mattina al risveglio.
A Tavira invece, proprio sulla sponda del fiume Gilão che attraversa la città noterete tantissimi buchi nella sabbia e se starete immobili per qualche secondo vedrete che da lì escono i Granchi violino o pugile caratterizzati da una chela più grande dell'altra. Occhio però, perchè al primo movimento si spaventano e corrono dentro alle loro tane!

Day 5 - Faro and Tavira

The magical Faro is characterized by a lagoon that separates the mainland from the strip overlooking the sea. Tavira, on the other hand, is a citadel surrounded by protective walls.

Fun facts: Both of these destinations were crowned by the encounter with the local fauna. Faro is the city of storks, you will see nests on every chimney, roof, church and it is wonderful to hear them sing in the morning when you wake up.
In Tavira, on the other hand, right on the bank of the Gilão river that crosses the city, you will notice many holes in the sand and if you stay still for a few seconds you will see that Fiddle or Boxer crabs come out from there. They are characterized by one claw larger than the other. But be careful, because at the first movement they get scared and run inside their holes!

Day 4 - Albufeira - Praia da Falesia

L'ex fortezza Albufeira è composta da vicoli stretti, l'antico castello e le case bianchissime con i loro terrazzi e archi costruiti durante il periodo arabo. Oggi una meta molto turistica ahimè tappezzata di cemento e stabilimenti balneari.

Fun facts:

Albufeira deve il suo nome alla parola araba al-Buħayra che significa "laguna" o in "riva al mare" oppure "castello del mare".
(Not so) fun fact, il terremoto dell'1 novembre 1755 causò una grande onda che distrusse quasi tutte le case del paese. I superstiti si rifugiarono all'interno di una chiesa ma anche questa crollò e seppellì sotto le macerie i suoi 227 occupanti.
Praia da Falesia invece è un lembo di terra sovrastato dalle tipiche falesie lunga circa 6 chilometri.

Assolutamente consigliato visitare questa meravigliosa e lunghissima spiaggia!

Day 4 - Albufeira - Praia da Falesia

The former Albufeira fortress is made up of narrow alleys, the ancient castle and the white houses with their terraces and arches built during the Arab period. Today a very tourist destination, alas, carpeted with concrete and bathing establishments.

Fun facts:

Albufeira owes its name to the Arabic word al-Buħayra which means "lagoon" or "by the sea" or "castle of the sea".
(Not so) fun fact, the earthquake of 1 November 1755 caused a great wave that destroyed almost all the houses in the town. The survivors took refuge inside a church but this too collapsed and buried its 227 occupants under the rubble.
Praia da Falesia instead is a strip of land dominated by the typical cliffs about 6 kilometers long.

Absolutely recommended to visit this wonderful and long beach!

Day 3 - Carvoeiro and Lagoa

Vorrei elencarle tutte le meravigliose spiagge che si possono visitare tra Carvoeiro e Lagoa ma onestamente ogni posto è speciale e caratteristico a modo suo.
Per esempio da Praia do Vale de Centeanes è possibile fare un tour in barca delle grotte che delimitano la costa dell'Algarve. La particolarità è che ogni grotta ha un nome che richiama la forma della roccia che le costituisce.
Interessante no?
Fun facts:
La grotta di Benagil è definita tale ma presenta un'apertura all'interno della quale entra la luce del sole, ed è raggiungibile solo via mare e in determinate condizioni perchè l'alta marea impedisce l'accesso.
L'Algar Seco è un monumento naturale composto da grotte e rocce scolpite dal vento durante milioni di anni. Qui si trova la famosa “Boneca” (bambola), una roccia a forma di cono rovesciato che sembra una bambola vista dal mare. Scendendo qualche gradino si ha accesso a uno dei più famosi tunnel dell'Algarve con due "finestre" che danno sul mare.
Si può seguire un percorso di diversi chilometri che collega le varie spiaggette e grotte che con l'alta marea scompaiono.

I'd love to make a list of all the wonderful beaches that can be visited between Carvoeiro and Lagoa but honestly every place is special and characteristic in its own way.
For example, from Praia do Vale de Centeanes it's possible to take a boat tour of the caves that border the Algarve coast. The peculiarity is that each cave has a name that recalls the shape of the rock that constitutes it.
Interesting, isn't it?

Fun facts:
The Benagil cave is defined as such but has an opening into which the sunlight enters, and can only be reached by sea and under certain conditions because the high tide prevents access to it during some period of the year and day.
Algar Seco is a natural monument made up of caves and rocks sculpted by the wind over millions of years. Here is the famous “Boneca” (doll), a rock in the shape of an inverted cone that looks like a doll seen from the sea. Going down a few steps you have access to one of the most famous tunnels in the Algarve with two "windows" overlooking the sea.
You can also follow a path for several kilometers that connects the various beaches and caves that disappear with the high tide.

Day 3 - Silves

Il castello di Silves sormonta la collina sul fiume Arade ed è caratterizzato da una base irregolare in mattone rosso "gres de Silves", con quattro torri e due porte: la principale e la "porta del traditore". Una delle architetture militari arabe a noi rimaste.

Fun facts:
Il primo nome di Silves fu Astarte dedicandola al protettore fenicio Astara.
Lo stato attuale del castello di Silves è dovuto a un progetto di restauro avvenuto negli anni '40 del secolo scorso.
La "porta del traditore" deve il suo nome all'ingresso delle truppe portoghesi che conquistarono la città dei mori sotto il regno di Sancho I.

Day 3 - Silves

Silves Castle surmounts the hill on the river Arade and is characterized by an irregular base and red bricks "gres de Silves", with four towers and two doors: the main one and the "Traitor's Gate". It is one of the remaining Arab military architectures in Portuguese land.

Fun facts:
Silves' first name was Astarte dedicating it to the Phoenician protector Astara.
The current state of the castle of Silves is due to a restoration project that took place in the 1940s.
The "Traitor's Gate" owes its name to the entrance of the Portuguese troops who conquered the city of the Moors under the reign of Sancho I.
