🚛 Features of Freight Transport in Switzerland 🇨🇭

Switzerland is a small but strategically important country for European logistics. Thanks to its location and advanced transport solutions, freight transport here has several unique features:

🔹 Strict Environmental Standards
Switzerland actively limits truck traffic in favor of rail transport. Diesel trucks are subject to a high tax (LSVA), encouraging the use of eco-friendly alternatives.

🚆 Freight Trains Instead of Trucks
Over 70% of transit cargo through the Alps is transported by rail. One of the key routes is the Gotthard Base Tunnel (57 km), the longest railway tunnel in the world.

💰 Toll Roads and Truck Restrictions
Trucks over 3.5 tons must pay road tolls. Additionally, there is a nighttime driving ban for trucks (from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM).

🛃 Strict Customs Procedures
Switzerland is not part of the EU, so crossing the border requires a full set of documents and compliance with customs regulations. However, simplified procedures exist for EU countries thanks to bilateral agreements.

🔄 Innovations in Logistics
Switzerland is testing autonomous electric trucks and developing an underground freight transport system, Cargo Sous Terrain, aimed at reducing road congestion.

Switzerland proves that freight transport can be both efficient and environmentally friendly! ♻️

Saving on logistics in Europe depends on several factors: the type of goods, shipment volume, routes, and transport mode. Here are some effective ways to reduce costs:

1. Route Optimization
• Use analytics and GPS tracking to find the shortest routes.
• Plan consolidated shipments to avoid empty runs.
• Implement hub-based logistics, delivering to central warehouses for further distribution.

2. Choosing the Optimal Transport Mode
• Rail transport is cheaper than road transport for long distances.
• Water transport (river and sea freight) can be more cost-effective for large shipments.
• Intermodal transport – combining different transport modes to reduce costs.

3. Partnering with Logistics Companies
• Consider outsourcing logistics (3PL, 4PL) if it’s cheaper than maintaining your own fleet.
• Choose local carriers who know the region well and offer better rates.
• Use freight exchange platforms (deep-control-loads.com) to find the most affordable carriers.

4. Warehouse Logistics Optimization
• Rent warehouses in tax-friendly zones or close to key markets.
• Use cross-docking to minimize storage costs.
• Automate inventory tracking and warehouse operations.

5. Tax and Customs Benefits
• Use customs warehouses to import goods without immediate duty payments.
• Take advantage of preferential tariffs under free trade agreements (e.g., between Ukraine and the EU).
• Utilize customs transit (TIR, CMR) to reduce paperwork and speed up deliveries.

6. Leveraging Technology
• Implement a TMS (Transport Management System) to automate logistics processes.
• Use AI-based route planning to minimize fuel and driver costs.
• Switch to electronic documentation (e-CMR) to speed up operations.

Infrastructure development and European integration

Infrastructure development and European integration are the main and permanent priorities of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine, which complement each other. Further development and deepening of the EU–Ukraine relations are based on the principles of political association and economic integration. It will contribute to the implementation of the best European standards in the field of infrastructure and give positive changes are at the macro and micro levels.

Since the beginning of the Ministry's work in 1992, one of the pivotal tasks has been to establish firm relations with European counterparts and to develop convenient and safety connections between our regions. Ukraine, as a new European country, had to become a reliable transcontinental transit country for the neighboring states and a business partner for the European Union. In this regard, the Ministry had been entrusted a great responsibility to preserve existing transport and logistic systems as well as building the new ones, with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

Over a 25 years period of work, more than 200 international agreements have been concluded, most of which have been signed with the European partners. The Ministry has always been an active coordinator and participant in the development and implementation of international projects and programmes related to the infrastructure and logistics, in particular, the European TACIS Programme for the Newly Independent States of Europe and Asia. Taking into account the geo-economic location of our country, TACIS experts considered Ukraine as an important transit country for trade among the newly independent states, Western Europe and other countries of the world, through the Black Sea ports. Moreover, they emphasized the importance of transport sector
