Cargo insurance protects the goods and is usually bought by the sender or the receiver. It covers the cargo no matter who is at fault. But important – it does not replace the carrier’s OCP insurance!

What’s the difference?

🔹 OCP – the carrier’s liability insurance, valid only if the carrier is responsible for the damage

🔹 CARGO – protects the cargo, regardless of who caused the damage

🚛 What is the XL code – and why does it matter?

The XL code is a certificate that confirms a trailer meets specific structural reinforcement standards – according to EN 12642. A trailer with this code can secure the load on its own, without the need for extra straps or beams (if the cargo is properly arranged).

🔒 When is it required? Most often for transporting:

- Beverages in PET bottles or cans

- Pallets with heavy loads (e.g. household appliances, electronics)

- Drums and IBC containers

- High-density goods (e.g. canned food)

💡 Thanks to the XL code, cargo is better secured and the transport is safer – even during sudden braking.

📄 What is a CMR Consignment Note?

The CMR is a key document in international road transport. It confirms the agreement between the sender and the carrier and outlines the conditions of the transport. It includes information about the parties involved, a description of the goods, pickup and delivery locations, as well as customs and insurance details.

When is the CMR issued?

The CMR is usually issued before the start of transport – most often by the sender. While it's not mandatory under the CMR Convention, it is widely considered a standard practice. Three original copies are created: one for the sender, one for the carrier, and one for the receiver. This document protects all parties involved and helps streamline customs clearance and invoicing.

📝 The CMR can also include notes about pallet exchange or the condition of the cargo (e.g., if damaged at pickup).

In Germany 🇩🇪, a document called the “Lieferschein” is more commonly used, which serves a similar purpose, but does not replace the CMR in international transport.

Insurance in transport – what do OCP and OCS mean?

📌 OCP – Carrier’s Liability Insurance

This insurance is for companies that physically transport goods. It protects against damage, loss, or delays caused during delivery. If a load is damaged, lost, or delivered late because of the carrier, OCP covers it. It’s a basic requirement for most transport clients.

📌 OCS – Freight Forwarder’s Liability Insurance

This is for companies that organize transport but don’t drive the trucks themselves. It covers mistakes in planning, documentation, or choosing the wrong carrier. For example: if the forwarder hires a carrier without proper insurance – the forwarder is responsible.

OCP protects the cargo during transport.

OCS protects the service and organization of transport.

Both are important – and it’s good to know which one protects your business.

⚠️ How to transport paint and varnish safely?

Paints, solvents, and varnishes often fall under ADR regulations – they can be flammable, corrosive, or toxic. Transporting them requires meeting specific safety rules:

🔹 Each item must have a UN number and a hazard class label

🔹 Bulk transport of paint is not allowed

🔹 You can’t mix paint with other dangerous goods that may react with it (like class 1, 4.1, or 5.2)

🔹 Packaging must be sealed and protected from fire

🔹 An ADR transport document is required with full details: UN number, class, packing group, quantity

🔹 For limited quantities (LQ), usually max. 5 liters per container

Also, the vehicle must be marked with orange ADR plates, and the driver needs proper ADR training and certification.
