Pakistan’s Supply Chain Shock:

Pak–Afghan Border Suspension – Alternate Trade Routes, Costs & Transit Times

By Muhammad Anwar, CMILT — 21 November 2025
CEO - North South Transport Network Pvt Ltd

When the Pak–Afghan border closes, Pakistan and Central Asian Republics loses their fastest and cheapest trade gateway. The suspension of key border points now has frozen bilateral trade between CARs and Pakistan, stranded transit cargo, and caused container buildup at Karachi and Qasim ports. Exporters, transporters, and regional partners face higher costs and operational complexity.

The Afghan route, when operational, offers: fastest transit, lowest cost, and shortest distance to Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

Alternate Corridors:

1. Pakistan → Iran → Central Asia (Land)

Transit: 10–15 days
Cost: Moderate–high

Pros:
*Year-round connectivity, *Iranian incentives,
*Avoids high-altitude bottlenecks
Cons:
*Higher fees
*Turkmenistan bureaucracy *Banking limits

Most scalable alternative.

2. Pakistan → China (Khunjerab Pass) → Central Asia
Transit: 12–20 days
Cost: Highest
Pros:
*Well-developed logistics
*TIR framework
Cons:
*Seasonal limits
*harsh winters
*Limited truck capacity

Best for high-value cargo.

3. Caspian & Caucasus via Iran

A. Anzali → Aktau (Multimodal):

Transit Times: 15–25 days Cost: moderate–high

Suitable for western Kazakhstan.

B. Astara → Azerbaijan → Russia (Land):

Transit Time: 12–18 days
Cost: Moderate–high

Stable route to Caucasus & Russia.

Transit Times at a Glance:
Iran–Turkmenistan 10–15d China–Khunjerab 12–20d Anzali→Aktau 15–25d Iran–Astara→Baku 12–18d

Strategic Takeaways:

1. Iran is Pakistan’s primary alternate gateway

2. Caspian multimodal is niche but viable

3. China route is seasonally constrained

4. Single-route dependence is risky

5. Diversification + trade facilitation are key

💬 Call for Discussion: Should Pakistan formalize a multi-corridor logistics strategy?

Exporters’ Offer: For secure, continuous cargo movement to Central Asia, the Caucasus, or Kazakhstan, both Iranian land corridors and Caspian routes are operational:
