One of the things I want to give my daughter is a real connection to the cultures she comes from, and also the curiosity to understand cultures beyond her own.
Onam is one of my favorite examples of that. It is Kerala’s harvest festival, linked to the return of the legendary King Mahabali, and what I love most is how deeply it brings people together. In Kerala, Onam is celebrated across religious communities. Hindu, Christian, Muslim. For many Malayalis, it has become a shared cultural celebration of home, abundance, family, and belonging.
And celebrating it at Kerala Samajam Vienna felt especially meaningful to me.
My parents have danced on that stage.
I have danced on that stage.
And one day, I hope my daughter will too.
That is what culture can do. It carries stories across countries, religions, and generations, and somehow makes all of them feel connected.
I want her to grow up knowing that the world is full of different traditions, and that understanding them is one of the most beautiful parts of growing up. 🤍
