A few moments from Hushe Valley, captured during our journey through Gilgit-Baltistan this June.
Beyond Khaplu, the road follows the Hushe River deeper into the mountains towards one of the more remote valleys of Baltistan.
Hushe village lies at around 3,050 metres (10,000 ft). It is roughly 50–60 km from Khaplu, normally taking 2–3 hours, or around 5–6 hours from Skardu, depending on road conditions and stops.
The road itself is part of the experience — becoming rough and narrow in places as it passes small settlements, glacier-fed streams and old suspension bridges. A suitable vehicle and experienced driver are important here.
The remoteness of Hushe also offers a glimpse into a very traditional way of life — small villages, cultivated fields, livestock and everyday village life beneath the immense mountains of the Karakoram.
Accommodation is very limited and simple. In Hushe, the last village of the valley, a guesthouse has been established in the name of Little Karim, the legendary local mountaineer and high-altitude porter. Otherwise, those looking for greater comfort are better accommodated in Khaplu.
For mountaineers and trekkers, Hushe is an important gateway into the high Karakoram, with routes towards Masherbrum, K6, K7, Charakusa Valley and Gondogoro La.
But you don't have to be a mountaineer to appreciate Hushe. During our visit, we stopped often — for the landscapes, the old bridges and simply to spend some time with the people we met along the way.
These photographs are a few glimpses from that day — the mountains, the people, the traditional village life and the quieter moments that make the journey to Hushe an experience in itself.
