Pakistan has received its first shipment from Central Asia through a new trade route via China, marking a major shift as goods arrive while bypassing Afghanistan.

The shipment from Kyrgyzstan reached Sost dry port in Gilgit Baltistan, highlighting the operational launch of an alternative corridor that avoids traditional Afghan transit routes. The development comes amid strained relations and ongoing disruptions along Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan, which have affected trade flows in recent months.

Under the new route, goods move through China via the Khunjerab Pass, giving Central Asian countries direct access to Karachi port for the first time without relying on Afghanistan.

Pakistan has approved the construction of the new N-15 highway, linking Mansehra to the Chinese border and offering a modern alternative to the Karakoram Highway.

The project, reviewed in an NHA meeting chaired by Abdul Aleem Khan, will connect Mansehra, Naran, Jhalakhand, and Chilas, reducing travel time and improving year-round access. Designed as a 4-lane route with a speed limit of 60–80 km/h, it will support trade, tourism, and defense.

Resorts, hotels, lakes, and shopping areas will be developed through public-private partnerships. Officials say the world-class highway will boost regional connectivity and economic growth.
