As a kid I grew up in a sugar mill community at Negros Occidental, Philippines. Life living in a sugar mill community was adequate in the 90’s. But in 1997, the sugar mill where my parents were working bugged down due to some mismanagement issues. Starting then, life became rough. We kept resilient despite the setbacks and continue to survive day to day living. Due to those days of setback and day to day struggle, I decided to become a seafarer. I was accepted for a scholarship grant by a Norwegian Shipping Company and set school for free. During my third year as a college student, I was sent onboard a chemical tanker ship for 12 months. It was part of my training. I thought that serving onboard the ship would resolve all the financial problems a person can have. But I was wrong, I learned from the stories of fellow seafarers who had gone before me and realized that employment alone cannot resolve all my financial issues. Moreover being a seafarer is no joke. Scenarios like uncertain weather and sea conditions, laborious jobs, late night shifts and hectic schedules shifting from port to port make it a test of will and faith. The fact that we are being away from our loved ones for months is what struck me really hard. It is not the homesickness that I worry but missing those special moments, occasions and memories in their lives. So I took on the journey to become financially educated.
