: HOW DID CAPIZ GET ITS NAME?

Did you know that the province of Capiz was named after a world-famous shell?

Capiz shell, known as windowpane oyster (Placuna placenta) or pios and lampirong locally, is one of the most sought-after fishery products in the Philippines.

History tells us that this shell has been utilized as a substitute for glass in sliding windows, particularly of the bahay na bato built predominantly during the Spanish period.

In the 1841 edition of Alonso de Mentrida's "Diccionario de la Lengua Bisaya, Hiligueina y Haraya de la Isla de Panay", the word Capiz was found was translated as "co**ha" or seashell.

In an 1860 edition of “Vocabolario de la lengua tagala”, the first Tagalog dictionary, the word Capiz was translated as "la Ventana" (Window).

The oyster saw a notable decline by the 1990s. This decline can be attributed to destructive fishing and gathering techniques such as trawling, dredging, blast fishing, and surface-supplied diving.

Today, capiz shells are primarily used in the production of decorative items like chandeliers, Christmas decorations, and windowpanes. In Capiz, there are community-based industries that thrive in making these items.

: HOW DID CAPIZ GET ITS NAME?

Legend has it that the name Capiz came from "kapid" or twins.

Once upon a time, a powerful datu by the name of Balingangan, the oldest son of Bangkaya, became the most powerful overlord of the Confederation of Madya-as. His wife gave birth to lovely twin girls. He named them "Adlaw" and "Bulan" (which means "Sun and Moon"). To pay homage to his daughters, he named his territory Aklan and Kapid, which means "twins." The Spaniards, who later arrived and colonized the Philippines, had a distinctive method of pronouncing the terminal d as th, which is how the d became z, hence, the reason why Kapid came to be known as Capiz.
