Our editorial team's top 10 Internet trends creating the biggest business opportunities in the next 5 years will be presented and debated at the AlwaysOn annual Silicon Valley Innovation Summit on July 29th and 30th at the Computer History in Mountain View. Follows is a sneak peek of these trends.
MOBILE IS OFFICIALLY THE KING OF THE INTERNET
We have all been predicting this for some time, but mobile now reigns as the leading driver of all things Internet. Global smartphones subscribers are growing at a 20 percent clip and tablets at 52 percent rate. In 2013, the number of smartphone users (1.6 billion) surpassed that of total laptop and desktop users combined (1.5 billion). When you add in the tablet users (439 million), smart mobile users will dwarf the entire PC industry in the next few years. In 2013, time spent on smartphones also surpassed time spent on PCs for the first time. A mobile sub-trend worth noting is that time on mobile apps (86 percent) continues to dominate mobile web time (14 percent). The bottom line to this trend is, in most cases, a new company's mobile app should be the number one consideration when thinking about how to build your business.
THE RISE AND CONSOLIDATION OF THE LAST-SECOND ECONOMY
Smartphones provide instant, addictive access to the Internet. The smartphone front-end combined with the sharing economy back-end provides a wildly powerful network multiplier effect. The old-style employer/employee and brick and mortar structure is giving way to new branded online communities which offer consumers instant and frictionless access to independent service providers that can be filtered by location, crowd rankings and other criteria and use simple mobile payments systems to complete transactions. This massive economic restructuring trend will create a plethora of new brand network opportunities. New service networks like Uber create a self-reinforcing virtuous cycle—the more users to the service, the more drivers are attracted to join, the more drivers, the more choice and availability keeping passengers re-using the service, and recommending it to their friends, etc. Growth in these circumstances can be exponential. Dozens of new entrepreneurial companies are leveraging this highly efficient model to create new service networks that are reinventing huge service industries, including doctors, lawyers, tutors, plumbers, and electricians.
THE FIRST INNING IN THE DATA ANALYTICS GAME
From 2013 to 2020, the digital universe will grow by a factor of 10 – from 4.4 trillion gigabytes to 44 trillion. The fastest growing segment driving this data boom comes from the “Internet of Things”—that is, new smart devices connected to the Internet. In 2013, only 22 percent of this data was tagged and analysis-ready, and less than 5 percent was actually analyzed. There will be many great online analytics companies created that will exploit the this explosion of unprocessed and unanalyzed data.
