DexproTIP highlights the need for smarter urban design—using heat-resilient materials and greener infrastructure—to reduce Metro Manila’s extreme surface temperatures and mitigate the urban heat island effect.

𝗝𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗛𝗢𝗧 𝗜𝗦 𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗥𝗢 𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗟𝗔?

Here’s a snapshot of satellite-derived land surface temperatures across Metro Manila and nearby areas last April. What patterns stand out to you?

In the map, dark red zones mark dense urban areas where surface temperatures exceed 40 °C and can reach up to 70°C, while bluish-green areas indicate cooler surfaces; some scattered patches represent clouds rather than ground temperatures.

The sharp contrast clearly shows Metro Manila’s hotter core versus its cooler suburbs. This pattern reflects the urban heat island effect, where concrete, asphalt, and buildings absorb and trap heat, while limited vegetation reduces natural cooling.

As cities expand, waste heat from vehicles and infrastructure further raises temperatures. These elevated surface temperatures can worsen energy demand, strain public health, and increase heat-related risks, especially for vulnerable communities.

HEAT INDEX DANGER LEVEL UP IN 7 AREAS ACROSS PH—PAGASA

MANILA, April 30, 2026 (AFP) — State weather bureau PAGASA on Thursday raised the danger level warning for heat index in seven locations across the country, as temperatures are forecast to reach between 42°C and 50°C.

Affected areas include NAIA in Pasay City (42°C), Dagupan City in Pangasinan (42°C), Cubi Point in Subic Bay and Olongapo City (42°C), Sangley Point in Cavite City (43°C), Aborlan in Palawan (43°C), Dumangas in Iloilo (42°C), and Guiuan in Eastern Samar (42°C).

The rest of the country will experience “extreme caution” level heat indices ranging from 33°C to 41°C, PAGASA said in its 5 p.m. bulletin.

The weather bureau urged the public to take precautions against heat stroke, including drinking water regularly, bringing umbrellas, avoiding prolonged exposure to sunlight between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., and staying updated on weather advisories.

PAGASA classifies heat index from 42°C to 51°C as the “danger” level, where heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely, and heat stroke is probable with continued activity.
