GREAT SANTA CRUZ PINK ISLAND ADVENTURE
(ZAMBOANGA CITY)

Recognized by National Geographic as one of the 21 Best Beaches in the World in 2017.

What makes the beach pink is because of the crushed red corals known as organ pipe corals (Tubipora musica) that blend well with the sand making it look like color pink specially on broad daylight. If you walk along the beach, there’s a good chance that you’ll see these corals that are washed ashore. The waters surrounding the islands are protected area teeming with vivid marine life, an ideal site for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Taking a selfie on a vinta screams out “I’ve been to Zamboanga”. Colorful vintas docked on the shore of Great Sta. Cruz Island. You can ride the vinta or just watched the sailing vinta from the shore. Vinta is a traditional outrigger boat characterized by their colorful rectangular sails. They are predominantly used for fishing in Zamboanga, Basilan and other parts of Mindanao.

Zamboanga City is home to five indigenous cultural communities, the Subanen, the Sama Bangingi, the Kolibugan, the Bajau and the Iyyakan (yakan). These Indigenous Peoples supposedly have existed before the establishment of Zamboanga City and even the Philippine Republic.

Depending on the tide if it will be possible to make a side trip to the sandbar. This is a long stretch of pink sand in between the 2 Islands (Great and Small Sta. Cruz Island). In the sandbar you will see the breathtaking scenery of blue and green ocean water.

Before the end of the trip some members of the Sama Bangingi community performed a traditional dance of the Tausūg people called ‘Pangalay’, it is a social activity of the community. This dance is a great testament to the rich cultural diversity of the people in Mindanao.

There is no accommodation on the island and camping isn’t allowed. The trip starts at 7am and you leave the Island at 2pm. 400 tourist per day only. You can bring your own food or buy it in the Island (you just have to book ahead). They have a policy for garbage disposal-you bring home the garbage you have. No tours on Fridays and Mondays.

To get there, you'll have to take a motorized boat from Paseo del Mar. Travel time is about 15-20 minutes.
