Panag-apoy is a sacred Sagada tradition on November 1st where families light bonfires on the graves of their departed loved ones to honor and remember them. The name translates to "to light a fire," and it involves burning "saleng" (pine fatwood) instead of candles. The ritual symbolizes the enduring belief that the souls of the dead continue to be with and watch over the living, and the fire provides warmth and light for them.
This is not a festival dear tourists.
We do hope that Sagada Tourism management can be able to figure out the proper management of influx of tourist. Because we admit it or not, people are curious, thus there are lots of visitors during this traditional event.
