Thirteen female members led the UP Mountaineers' first ever all-women’s climb in the summer of 1983 at Mt. Susong Dalaga of the Malepunyo mountain range.

At the summit, the girls posed for a picture while waving their bras in the air. It might seem like a small thing, but the gesture was a show of liberation, comfort, and freedom from a women-led climb.

Mountaineering was largely a physical and masculine field before. It was not characteristic of women to engage in such activities. But women mountaineers defied expectations and paved the way for future women and girls who want to climb mountains— just because they can.

To this day, the UP Mountaineers boasts of strong-willed women who are trailblazers in the mountains. Our women are leading conservation projects, reforestation efforts, outdoor sports, climbs and explorations— even a woman is currently at the helm of our organization.

Before, it was unthinkable for women to scale mountains; now women lead and make way. Let us celebrate the women around us who continue to challenge sexist norms and conquer new heights.
