The Office for Transportation Security (OTS) confirms that it received a report regarding an incident that occurred on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at Iloilo Airport involving a passenger and responding officers of the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group.
Based on initial information, during the conduct of standard aviation security screening procedures, an OTS Security Screening Officer immediately detected and flagged a prohibited item inside a passengerโs bag, which necessitated secondary screening in accordance with established security protocols.
Upon request to submit the bag for manual baggage inspection, the passenger reportedly seized the bag from the X-ray machine and fled the screening area.
Further reports indicate that while fleeing, the passenger retrieved a bladed weapon prompting immediate response from police officers at the airport premises. Personnel of the Philippine National Police promptly intervened and undertook appropriate action to prevent possible injury to surrounding passengers and airport personnel. In the course of this response, the passenger was shot in the chest. He was subsequently brought to the hospital for medical attention.
The incident is currently the subject of further investigation by the OTS, in coordination with airport authorities and law enforcement agencies.
The OTS reiterates that the immediate detection of the prohibited item by its screening personnel and the swift response of law enforcement underscore the effectiveness of existing security measures preventing weapons and other dangerous items which may be used to commit acts of unlawful interference such as plane hijacking.
The Office remains committed to the strict implementation of security measures to ensure the safety and security of the traveling public and airport personnel.
