(RECORD) BREAKING NEWS! 📢

ICTSI South Pacific terminals, South Pacific International Container Terminal (SPICT) and Motukea International Terminal (MIT) made history as they welcomed the largest international container vessel to call PNG.

The 223 meters LOA gearless ship KOTA GABUNG made its inaugural call in SPICT on 12 November and in MIT on 17 November.

The ship is operated by Mariana Express Line Ltd. as part of the ‘North Asia Express Service’ which is a Vessel Sharing Agreement (VSA) between Mariana Express Line Ltd. and Swire Shipping Line, connecting Eastern and Southern China main ports to Papua New Guinea and Northern Australia.

“The milestone highlights the growing confidence in ICTSI South Pacific terminals for delivering best-in-class service and is aligned with our strong investment in pursuit of our vision of making our facilities the most modern and efficient international port terminals in the Pacific Islands region,” said Robert Maxwell, ICTSI South Pacific chief executive officer.

SPICT is now equipped with two post-Panamax Ship-To-Shore cranes, which can service up to 5,000-TEU vessels. These STS cranes are the first of their kind and currently the largest port equipment in PNG. Additionally, MIT has doubled its waterside capability this year by adding another Mobile Harbor crane to ensure safer and faster turnaround of ships.

Mr. Maxwell added: “We appreciate Mariana Express Line Ltd. trust to ensure the success of this gearless vessel operating in the PNG trade. We are looking forward to seeing more gearless vessels being deployed in the near future.”

30th September 2023 marked another milestone for South Pacific International Container Terminal (SPICT) in Lae, as it received two brand new MITSUI Hybrid Rubber Tyre Gantry (RTG) Cranes.

This state-of-the-art Japanese equipment will support SPICT’s yard operations with the aim of serving vessels faster and support more efficient landside operations by reducing the Port Users’ truck turnaround time within the facility.

Moreover, these RTG are Hybrid as they are equipped to collect, store and release electricity during operations, and making them the first of its kind in Papua New Guinea.

This shows SPICT ongoing efforts to invest in equipment that reduces the terminal’s greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from its operations.

“The receival of two electric Ship-To-Shores Cranes for the berth early this year was the first big step of our terminal decarbonization journey, and we are very excited to receive these Hybrid RTG Cranes to also help reduce our carbon footprint in the yard.” said Robert Maxwell, CEO ICTSI South Pacific.

On 23 September 2023, South Pacific International Container Terminal (SPICT) in Lae celebrated its annual Safety Day with all of its employees and their families.

This year, the event is a celebration for the terminal's milestone of achieving more than 2,000 days of operations without a LTI (Lost Time Injury). This is the result of SPICT's strong efforts and commitment to Safety as the core of its operations.

Under the theme 'Zero Harm' and following its 'Fatal Five' (group of safety risks), SPICT employees were split into five different teams for activities and a talent show display in relation to Control of Contractors, Stored Energy, Transportation, Suspended Loads and Working at Heights.

By continuously investing in modern equipment, IT infrastructure and people upskilling in safety international standards of terminal operations, SPICT's objective is to mitigate its identified Fatal Five risks for employees as well as for customers and port users.
