About a month and a half ago, I carried out an inspection on one of my properties in Port Moresby after a long term corporate tenant moved out. What I walked into was honestly heartbreaking.
The main bedroom mattress was torn apart, with springs exposed and thrown outside. The queen size bed frame was in pieces. A 6 piece living room couch set had been completely destroyed and replaced with a worn, dirty couch. There were children’s drawings all over the walls, a blocked kitchen sink, broken doors, rubbish everywhere, just disorder and neglect.
In my many years of property management, I had never come across anything like this. I found myself questioning whether people with basic cleanliness and hygiene had actually lived there.
I had initially sent two of my staff to inspect the property, and the photos and videos they shared were deeply disappointing, especially as I was preparing for church in Kavieng that morning. But I chose to respond calmly: we will fix it.
After three weeks of sourcing materials and making countless trips to hardware stores, we restored the property. I even flew in to ensure everything progressed smoothly so a new tenant could move in without delay.
To every property owner who has walked this journey through sacrifice, pressure, and persistence, you will understand this feeling.
I reminded myself that this tenant had been consistent and reliable for years. Wear and tear is part of the journey. More importantly, this home was dedicated to God 16 years ago, and I trust that everything happens in His time. That gave me peace.
That same week, I was overwhelmed managing multiple property issues, but my partner stepped in and said, “Leave it with me.” He ensured everything from garbage disposal to plumbing was taken care of.
A special acknowledgment to my brothers:
One who was there from day one in my absence, running around to Leon Hardware to purchase materials and working hands on with his team full time on repairs, never once giving an excuse. And to my other brother, who ensured my workmen were picked up and dropped off daily so repairs could flow smoothly, your commitment did not go unnoticed.
To my staff, especially my brothers, thank you for always standing strong.
This is a gratitude post.
In the spirit of this year’s International Women’s Day theme, “Give to Gain,” I’m reminded that when you give your time, strength, patience, and faith, you gain resilience, growth, and the right people around you.
To my partner, my team, and everyone who supports me in Port Moresby, thank you for your patience, loyalty, and for standing by me, even when I wasn’t at my best.
Grateful. Always.
