Planning a trip to Tahiti? Don’t make the mistake of treating the island of Tahiti as just the place you fly into.

When travelers think of a French Polynesia vacation, Bora Bora and Moorea usually get most of the attention. But if you love hiking, waterfalls, mountains, adventure and authentic Polynesian experiences, Tahiti deserves a few nights of its own.

Is Tahiti worth staying on? Absolutely—especially for active and adventurous travelers.

Tahiti is home to some of the most spectacular waterfalls in French Polynesia. Head beyond Papeete and the landscape changes dramatically—lush valleys, towering volcanic peaks, tropical rainforest and waterfalls cascading down steep green cliffs.

You’ll find places like Faarumai Waterfalls, where three waterfalls are tucked into a lush valley, as well as waterfalls throughout Papenoo Valley, one of my favorite areas for experiencing Tahiti’s wild interior. Some falls are easily accessible, while others are discovered deeper in the valleys and mountains with a local guide.

And then there’s Tahiti Iti, with its rugged coastline, mountains, small villages and legendary Teahupoʻo.

Where is some of the best hiking and waterfall scenery in French Polynesia?

Tahiti should be near the top of the list. Moorea may be famous for its mountain views, but Tahiti’s enormous volcanic interior offers something completely different—wild, green and surprisingly untouched.

The best part? You don’t have to choose between adventure and luxury.

Spend 2–3 nights on Tahiti exploring waterfalls, hiking and discovering the island’s interior, then continue to Moorea, Bora Bora, Taha’a or another French Polynesian island for turquoise lagoons, snorkeling, beaches and overwater bungalows.

Don’t just fly into Tahiti. Stay on Tahiti. Explore Tahiti.

Tahiti isn’t simply the gateway to French Polynesia.

Tahiti is a destination. 🌺

Would waterfalls and hiking convince you to add a few nights on Tahiti to your itinerary?

Ever wonder what it’s like to watch the sun set over Mo’orea from Tahiti? 🌅 These two sister islands sit just 11 miles apart, and this view never gets old—even for those of us who call these islands home. The silhouette of Mo’orea’s dramatic peaks against the golden sky is something you simply have to experience in person. This is the Tahiti locals know and love, and we’re honored to share it with travelers seeking authentic moments. Whether you’re planning a honeymoon or an adventure off the beaten path, we know exactly where to take you for views like this. Contact us to design your tailor-made Tahitian experience. ✨

What does off-the-beaten-path Tahiti really look like? Welcome to Tautira, a tranquil village on Tahiti Iti where dramatic weather sweeps across volcanic peaks and the rhythm of local life continues unchanged by tourism. Some days bring moody clouds that hug the mountains, others deliver brilliant sunshine that sparkles on the lagoon—both reveal a raw, authentic beauty. After over 20 years of exploring these islands, places like Tautira remind us why we fell in love with French Polynesia. 🇵🇫

Why does an empty jam jar make me emotional? 🥹 Because it came from somewhere I can’t just “run back to.”

Nobody talks about buying a souvenir from the motherland and then running out—but here we are. This nectarine jam from Rapa Iti, purchased from a local artisan last April, is finished. Rapa Iti is one of French Polynesia’s most remote islands, reachable only by boat, not plane. Every spoonful was a tiny taste of that adventure, that connection to place, that moment of supporting a small island business. Now the jar sits empty, precious in its own way—a reminder that the best souvenirs aren’t just objects, they’re stories. They’re relationships with people and places that changed us. 🧡

What’s the most meaningful souvenir you’ve brought home from your travels?

Something special is coming to Bora Bora.

Most of you know Bloody Mary’s — the legendary sandy-floor restaurant where locals and travelers have shared tables, fresh fish, and stories since 1979. It’s one of those rare places that actually feels like Bora Bora, not a postcard version of it.

Now that spirit is becoming a full hotel experience. Bloody Mary’s Hotel opens Summer 2026 — 53 rooms, bungalows, and suites, from overwater villas with direct lagoon access to mountain-side retreats with Otemanu views.

What I love about this property:

🐚 It’s built on connection, not exclusion. The philosophy is luxury through belonging — island hospitality with a pulse, not a velvet rope.

🐚 Three dining venues including the original restaurant, Povai Bay overwater bistro, and La Bella Matira right on Bora Bora’s best beach — with a complimentary shuttle between them.

🐚 It’s rooted in place. This isn’t a brand that parachuted in. Bloody Mary’s has been part of the fabric of Bora Bora for over four decades.

This is the kind of property I get excited to share with my clients — one where you actually live Bora Bora like the locals do.

I’ll be keeping a close eye on this one as it opens. If you want to be among the first to experience it, let’s talk. 🌺
