From Andean Horizons to Amazonian Depths: An Unforgettable Journey
Here’s my take on how to share this incredible trip:
Watching the sunrise at Tres Cruces in Paucartambo is nothing short of mind-blowing. Sitting at 3,800 meters above sea level, you witness an optical phenomenon so unique that it only occurs in two places on Earth: Peru and Japan. In fact, this extraordinary phenomenon is precisely why Japan is known as the “Land of the Rising Sun”—its sunrise is identical to the one we are blessed with here in Peru. Standing above the clouds and watching the light break over the horizon is a moment that stays with you forever.
But the journey was just getting started. From the chilly heights of 3,800 meters, we descended all the way down to 500 meters into the heart of the Amazon at the Manu Biosphere Reserve. Moving from the high Andes straight into the lush jungle showed me just how vast and versatile Peru’s microclimates truly are.
The rainforest experience was unforgettable. We took night walks through the jungle to spot caimans, caught local fish, and learned directly from the native community how to cook them using traditional methods. We even had to dive into warm lagoons to harvest fresh freshwater clams and then learn how to prepare them. To top it all off, we had plenty of hilarious encounters with the local wildlife—including a crazy little parrot who was determined to steal our food!
Peru is a truly magnificent country with an unbelievable variety of landscapes and altitudinal zones. Going from the crisp mountain air of the Andes to the wild depths of the Amazon in a single trip is an extraordinary experience that more people in the world need to know about.
This was just our first exploratory expedition. Next time, we plan to take this incredible journey from the mountains to the jungle on bicycles!
