Planning your first Cusco trip: what to decide before you book anything
Most first-time visitors to Peru lose time on the same four questions. Answer them in this order and the rest gets simpler.
How many days. Five days covers the main Cusco route: City Tour, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain, organized in an order that respects logistics and altitude. If you want a more active trip, six days adds Humantay or a mountain landscape day, with Maras Moray and Palcoyo as softer alternatives.
Machu Picchu tickets and trains. These are the pieces with real limits. A round-trip tourist train in PeruRail Expedition or IncaRail Voyager, the bus between Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu, and the llaqta entrance according to the available circuit. Your travel date has to work around availability, not the reverse, which is why this is the first thing to confirm.
Altitude. Build the trip so the high-altitude day comes later. A lighter city day first, then the Sacred Valley toward the train, then Machu Picchu, then Rainbow Mountain. If you are not acclimatized or prefer a softer rhythm, the itinerary should be adjusted, and Palcoyo can replace Rainbow Mountain when the group wants less physical pressure.
Transfers and hotels. Decide before arrival. Tikaymi coordinates round-trip airport transfers, tourist transport, and hotel pick-up and drop-off for the listed services. The hotel option adds 3 nights in Cusco and 1 night in Aguas Calientes, with breakfast. The Integral Tourist Ticket for the City Tour and Sacred Valley, the Qoricancha entrance, the Sacred Valley buffet lunch, and the Vinicunca semi-buffet breakfast and lunch with oxygen and first-aid kit are part of the coordinated plan. Meals not mentioned in the itinerary and horse rental in Vinicunca are handled separately.
