KM 82: Where the 4-Day Classic Inca Trail Begins

This is KM 82 — the starting point of the famous 4-Day Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

Located at approximately 2,680 meters (8,790 feet) above sea level, KM 82 marks the point where trekkers officially begin their journey into the Andes.

From here, the trail follows ancient Inca pathways through a remarkable variety of landscapes — from the Urubamba River and small Andean communities to archaeological sites, mountain valleys, high passes, and eventually the cloud forest surrounding Machu Picchu.

But KM 82 is more than just a starting point. It is the first step of a 4-day, 3-night journey that covers roughly 45 kilometers (28 miles) of ancient trail.

Along the way, hikers will face steep climbs, changing elevations, unpredictable mountain weather, and the famous Dead Woman’s Pass at around 4,215 meters (13,828 feet).

And after four days of walking through the Andes, the journey reaches its unforgettable destination — Machu Picchu.

So, this is where our adventure begins… KM 82.
