Meanwhile, across the awa, Te Pūwaha contractors have reached the halfway point for the South Mole.

If you use the Wharf Street boat ramp, you’ll notice some improvements around the end of the recreational slipway, with work to upgrade the nearby rock wall almost complete.

These before-and-after images show the difference the work has already made.
The work will help maintain water depth and clearance at the end of the slipway, while also protecting the riverbank from scour erosion and helping maintain a straighter channel.

Whanganui Port and Loaders Civil have repositioned the existing rocks and concrete blocks between the boat ramp and the new Wharf 3, with additional rock added to strengthen the riverbank and connect with the existing rock revetment.

It will also make the area safer and tidier from the land, particularly where scouring had been occurring around the concrete blocks.

The final touches include reinstating the fence and grassing the bank, so it ties in with the surrounding area.

Thanks for your patience while this work has been underway.

If you’re heading to the Wharf Street boat ramp at Whanganui Port from next week, a heads-up that ID Loader will be carrying out work along the nearby rock wall.

This work will help to protect the bank from scour erosion and help to maintain a straighter channel at the end of the boat ramp.

The existing rocks and concrete blocks will be removed and repositioned to connect with the existing rock revetment. Once complete, it will provide better access to the end of the launch ramp.

Work is scheduled to get underway on Thursday, 16 July. The slipway will remain open and available as usual throughout the work.

To keep everyone safe, part of the car park will be temporarily fenced off for around eight weeks. There will still be limited parking available on site.

We know this may be a little inconvenient for regular boat ramp users and recreational fishers and we appreciate your patience.

Please take care around the work site and follow all temporary signage.

Thanks for your support.

The South Mole is integral to the success of Te Pūwaha, working alongside other elements to strengthen the river mouth, protect the Whanganui Port, and support a safer channel.

These images show it doing exactly what it’s designed to do.

With Phase Two starting soon, this work continues to build a more resilient, connected coastal environment.

Proud to see this project come to life at Whanganui Port.

Q-West’s plug-in hybrid electric fast ferry, the first build utilising our new hard stand and mobile boat hoist, is a great example of what’s possible when local expertise, infrastructure and partnership align.

In a major milestone for Auckland’s public transport network, the city’s first plug-in hybrid electric fast ferry has performed exceptionally on sea trials and will soon enter service on the busy Auckland to Devonport commuter route. The vessel achieved a top speed of 36 knots on all-electric mo...

A cool story about AJD, an annual visitor to the Whanganui River estuary. Please be mindful of AJD and his friends. 🐦

Thanks to the recent spell of good weather, our dredging operator is now based in the main channel of the Whanganui Port basin, from the Wharf Street boat ramp to the awa.

From this week onwards, they will be side casting silt during high tides, as this is the quickest way to clear the channel.

If you are heading out in your boat, we do ask you to proceed through the Whanganui Port basin with caution and stick to the marked channel.

When navigating the port basin, please:
✅ Stay between the rows of red and green channel markers at all times.
✅ Remain outside the red markers – the area marked in red is excluded to boat operators at all times.
✅ Most of all – be a responsible skipper.

Thank you to all of our boat operators for your patience and compliance. Safe boating out there. 🛥
