Portabote Alpha 3000 designed to flex

The new alpha model Portabote boat is designed to flex, thus absorbing wave impact, the hull material is 4mm co-polymer that is used in things like car bumpers and bullet proof vests apparently, is UV stabilised, impervious to acids, oils, fuels and is extremely tough.

The Japanese Coast Guard standard integrity test is to put 250 kg's of concrete in a boat then drop it from 6 metres up into the water, no worries. They're also certified by the US Coastguard, and the relevant authorities here in Newzealand, Aus and overseas, and used by numerous Search and Rescue organisations in Europe.

They've also been tested at 500,000 folds with no failure, and the manufacturers offer a ten year hull warranty, it also has 300 pounds of positive buoyancy and floats level when swamped.

The hull seams are formed by routing a groove in the material itself which is then stapled together with a sealing strip between them, and what looks like a back ag pipe cover over the outside. It is designed even to routinely stand up to chuck lures, very stable, just a bit flexy underfoot.

Folded up it's about the size of a stand-up paddle board and goes on the roof bars of any standard cars.When loading it just lift the front up first, then the back and strap it down, job's right.Compared to the little tinny? A LOT easier to load and unload, and far more seaworthy.

It is also designed to overcome a big runout tide with 15-20 knots of northerly blowing against it picking up a nasty two or three foot chop with square edges and whitecaps yu can PLAY in it, surfing, running through it at all angles towing a spinner, not a drop of water came on board. The tinny would have swamped, no doubt about it.

Porta-bote’s size and weight.

Our 10 foot 8 inch Porta-bote weighs about 78 pounds and folds up to the size of a long surfboard. That makes her easy to get on and off the deck for storage purposes. Folded she’s between 3” and 7” thick. That’s flat enough that we can easily see over her underway, something that was a challenge with many other dinghy’s.Total capacity is 585 lbs (266kg) including an engine that can weigh no more than 56 lbs. In practice the biggest four stroke engine possible is six hours power. If you can buy a two - stroke engine you might get something more in the 10 -15 horse power range with that weight.

Porta-bote is most suitable for Newzealand fishing conditions as it enables access on many South Island lakes and rivers where shore access is difficult.The Arnold River, and Lake Poerua instantly comes to mind as being ideally suited to fish with the Porta-bote. These delightful waters are almost unfishable from shore.

Holiday anglers in the Marlborough Sounds could also make great use of a Porta-bote for sea fishing. Wetting a line for a snapper just off shore is a very pleasant experience indeed! It would also be a great little craft for white baiting, setting a mullet net, or a ship to shore dinghy. You can even use it as a sailboat!
