The fire that burnt through more than 1,000 hectares of the internationally significant Whangamarino wetland is fully controlled after nine days.

Over Labour Weekend our aerial and ground crews inspected along the fire perimeter using thermal drones, and today we can confirm there are no further hotspots.

The burnt area contains the largest and most intact raised peatland habitat in Whangamarino. This globally rare habitat is one of the few remaining raised peatlands in the southern hemisphere.

The unique habitat supports a high diversity of threatened native wetland species, including black mudfish/waikaka, Australasian bittern/matuku-hūrepo, and spotless crake/pūweto. It also hosts many threatened plant species and is the only known location of the critically endangered swamp helmet orchid.

Individual animals will have perished in this fire, and there has been an enormous loss of habitat.

However, we protected around 148 hectares of peatland, thanks to the quick response and co-ordinated effort of everyone involved and this area will be critical to the vegetation recovery.

We wish to extend our huge gratitude to everyone who helped with this collaborative effort to control the fire.

We all have very sad and heavy hearts at the moment. Some of you may of met our smiley, bubbly and lovely Pheobe when you came to Skywork. She was the welcoming face behind the front desk, the voice behind the calls, the smiley face behind the computer. Pheobe suffered a cardiac arrest last week and now is in ICU. Her family has created a “Give a Little page” to help support Pheobe and her family. Pheobe just had her first baby 3.5 months ago and is now truly going through the unthinkable. Any donations big or small to help out this family would ever be so grateful. The Skywork Team love you Pheobe and we are all thinking of you, we know you have got this - be strong!

Fire attack on a recent fire fighting job 🔥💦🚁

Our helicopter will be undertaking an inspection of powerlines west of the Waiheke airfield Thursday 18th January. The purpose is to locate and identify issues and have them resolved hopefully before there is a power outage. We are using instruments and cameras to check the top of each pole and the wire in the spans between the poles.

Robbie may you R.I.P. - you will always have a special place in our hearts at Skywork & be sadly missed.
