Wānaka locals are invited to bring their well-loved belongings back to life at Wastebusters’ free Repair Revolution event this Sunday.
Taking place at the Wānaka Community Workshop at 15 Gordon Road, from 10.00am to 2.00pm on Sunday, 30 August, the event will bring together skilled local volunteers who are generously sharing their time and knowledge to help keep useful items in use for longer.
People can bring along one item in need of some care, including bikes, small electrical items, clothing, homewares and more. The team will do its best to help, with repairs depending on the skills, tools and time available on the day.
Visitors will sit alongside their repairer, discover how to fix their belongings, and hopefully leave with a useful new skill.
Event organiser Abi Hurford Abel said Repair Revolution events are as much about bringing the community together as they are about fixing things. “These days are always so wholesome and easy-going. It’s wonderful to see people connecting, sharing knowledge and working together to give good items a longer life,” she said.
Repair Revolution is free to attend, with no registration required. This Resourceful Communities event is proudly supported by the Queenstown Lakes District Council Zero Waste District Programme.

Wānaka Community Workshop is growing – and we are starting to think about what comes next.
Founded in 2020, WCW is a charitable trust providing people across the Upper Clutha with access to practical tools, equipment, skills and opportunities to learn, make, repair and share. Our Wood Workshop and Sewing Room bring people of all ages and backgrounds together through memberships, classes, volunteer sessions and community projects, while helping to keep useful materials in circulation and out of landfill.
From woodworking and sewing classes to mending, upcycling, repair projects and community initiatives, both spaces are used by people of all ages and abilities. Volunteers are an important part of what we do, sharing their knowledge and skills while creating opportunities for people to connect and contribute.
Visitors and new members are always welcome, so come along, have a look around, meet our members and see what happens at WCW.
As membership and participation grow, we are exploring what WCW could offer in the future – and we want the community to be part of the conversation. What would you like to see? More classes and practical skills? Repair and reuse initiatives? Electronics, digital making or other creative activities? Could WCW work with other organisations to share resources and facilities?
We are also keen to hear from anyone with suitable land for a future community facility, or interested in a financial partnership. Complete our short survey using the QR code or visit: wanakacommunityworkshop.org.nz

This week's Messenger front page is - What does it take to build thriving communities in a rapidly changing world? That’s the question at the heart of Wao Summit 2026, returning from 27–31 October for its ninth year. Over five days, the Summit brings together internationally recognised speakers, local experts and innovators alongside community and national leaders to explore practical ideas that can help our region and all of New Zealand navigate change with confidence. From learning what nature can teach us to exploring better business, healthier buildings and stronger local food systems, each themed day offers inspiring conversations, practical experiences and real-world solutions. This year, Rippon Hall becomes the home of Wao Summit, hosting keynote sessions and gathering spaces, alongside an award-winning exhibition by acclaimed photographer Camilla Rutherford. Field trips, films and immersive experiences complete a programme designed to connect people with ideas, place and one another.
Programme Director Monique Kelly says this year’s Summit has been designed for a time when people are looking for hope, practical ideas and meaningful connection. “We’re navigating change in different ways. We want people to leave feeling informed, connected and inspired, with ideas they can apply in their own lives, businesses and communities.”
Whether you’re a business owner, builder, teacher, student, parent or curious about the future, Wao Summit offers the opportunity to learn, connect and discover practical ways to help shape thriving communities for generations to come.
27–31 October 2026 - Limited Early Bird tickets available now. Explore the full programme at: wao.co.nz/summit2026

This week's Messenger front page is.....The annual Rotary Club of Wānaka Book and Jigsaw Sale, which will feature thousands of second hand books, will take place this weekend for three days, from Friday, 31 July to Sunday, 2 August. The book sale has for years attracted hundreds of people to the Lake Wānaka Centre in search of a great read at a bargain price.
Rotary Club of Wānaka president Geoff McLeay said the public response to donating books and jigsaws over the past few weeks had been wonderful. “We have had thousands of books and a lot of jigsaws dropped off at Mitre 10 MEGA,” Geoff said. “The Rotary team are busy sorting them and preparing for the sale.” The books have been categorised to make browsing easy. Children’s books are just $1, while novels and general interest books are priced from $3. Some newer books and special interest books are a little more expensive. “It’s a big job to categorise and price but well worth it when we see the response and the funds we can raise for the community,” Geoff said. All funds raised will go to help the Rotary Club of Wānaka support worthwhile projects and causes.
The book sale will take place at the Lake Wānaka Centre from Friday, 31 July to Sunday, 2 August. Opening hours are 10.00am - 4.30pm each day.
