Buying firewood in winter is very different to buying firewood in summer.
There is less choice available, some merchants stop selling altogether, and unfortunately the marketplace starts filling up with backyard sellers and the occasional scammer.
Winter in Wanaka and Central Otago can be cold, damp and wet, especially sitting on the edge of the Southern Alps. Firewood is a natural product, and different wood species react to winter conditions very differently.

We simply don't sell Pine in winter. As a softer wood, it absorbs moisture from the air very easily โ even from fog and heavy dew. While Pine can be beautifully seasoned and dry over summer but winter conditions can quickly compromise its quality. We don't believe it's fair to sell a product that we know may not perform as customers expect.

While Blue Gum is a hardwood, it can still absorb moisture over winter surprisingly quickly. No matter how well seasoned it is, winter conditions can affect its moisture content and burning performance similar to Pine.

Larch behaves similarly to Oregon in many ways. We've found it can be a little harder to light initially and benefits from plenty of dry kindling and a good hot fire to get it going. Once burning, it performs extremely well. It can absorb some moisture over winter, but not to the same extent as Pine or Blue Gum.

Macrocarpa is a medium to high-density wood that generally handles winter conditions well. It burns hot and clean and is easier to keep in good condition over winter. The downside is that it can split into smaller pieces during processing, but it remains a popular and reliable firewood choice.

Oregon is our preferred winter firewood and the reason it is the main wood we supply at this time of year. It is a medium-density wood with natural resin characteristics that make it easy to light and more resistant to absorbing moisture. It also dries out quickly when exposed to sunshine and airflow, making it the most reliable option for winter burning in our climate.
At Uppercut Firewood, we're not just interested in selling wood โ we're interested in supplying wood that will burn well when you need it most.
That's why Oregon remains our winter wood of choice.
