One of the most beautiful funerals I ever lead was for my friend's mother, who had been a teacher for children with diverse needs. The venue was the Buckland Yacht Club and it was decked out with inflated doves which were biodegradable, so that once floated into the air they were 'sitting-doves', at the mercy of the elements and of no danger to other doves or to seagulls waiting to chew on a piece of rubber balloon.Some of the doves were tied onto the handles of children's wheelchairs. Ritual, symbolism and sustainability can go hand in hand.My friend, a musician, sang for his mother. More recently I helped this family farewell their father. Again, Stewy played music, on the grand piano, and mourners sand along to "Old Time Rock and Roll". Grandson Flynn composed a tune the night before and played it on the violin. Ritual, symbolism and entertainment go hand in had.

What death or funeral rituals have you been part of?

This June 19th, I wrote the names of my loved ones in the sand. Those who had ridden on Te Waka o Rangi for the past year and became stars with the rising of the Matariki ma Puanga.

As celebrants, companions, or community members, we’ve all stood at the edge of life in different ways. Some of us have guided farewells through tangihanga on the marae. Others have lit candles in silence or gathered to share stories to honour a loved one’s journey.
