Sometimes history comes back to visit… ✨
Today we had two very special guests on board - Rhonda and Peter. What made the trip extra special is that Rhonda’s great-great-grandfather was Captain John Grono, the Welsh sealer believed to be the first European to sail into Milford Sound in the early 1800s.
Legend says he discovered the hidden entrance while searching the Fiordland coast for seals and, seeking shelter from a storm, named it “Milford Haven” after his hometown in Wales. The name later changed to Milford Sound - even though it’s actually a fiord.
Rhonda last visited Milford Sound when she was younger, so returning all these years later with her husband Peter made the day even more meaningful
How special to stand in the same place where her ancestor once sailed over 200 years ago.
Thanks for exploring Milford Sound with us and - moments like these make Fiordland even more magical.
