The concept for the QBYC came from an original idea by experienced NZ yachtsman Graeme Hull who, in Queenstown in the early 90's, combined an adult sail training program with a match racing business house competition on Lake Wakatipu. It was very successful and soon both the business and the social competition needed a home. Enter Eichardt's Tavern and its Publican and fellow yachtie John Mann. Eichardt's had the space and the support structure to ensure that Graeme's initiative really did sing, and so it did! The sailing school was very successful, introducing dozens of locals to sailing and further developing the skills of those who wanted to. The club was equally successful, with regular Wednesday evening team match racing along with weekend 'championship' events and their associated legendary after-match functions. It is the after match function aspect of the club that survives today, It lost its original clubrooms long ago, but it has since acquired a yacht and a base in Auckland and its sailing holiday operations have gone global. Safe sailing for fun in exotic locations with good people from the Wakatipu is what the Queenstown Bay Yacht Club is about now. Shared costs and shared fun...for grown ups...
