How you know you aren't in America: you show up to the immigration office prior to its opening. There is a queue. Everyone queues except one dude who rushes in when the door opens and queue jumps about 4 places. AND NO ONE SAYS ANYTHING.

Was walking to my bus after work and heard two Americans talking and giggled in my head and thought "the American accent sounds funny!" Now I know what all my Kiwi co-workers were laughing about when I first arrived. I know I thought the Kiwi accent sounded funny but now I don't hear it.

Road the Intercity yesterday back into Auckland. Sat next to a 25 year old Kiwi girl who hasn't been to Auckland in 10 years. When we pulled into Auckland she said "wow! It's so big!" I always figured that would be the response to this little big city from a rural kid...

At the Dressmart in Hamilton. This is essentially an outlet mall within a mall because Dressmart is at Te Awa but there are stores inside. Long story short its kind of rubbish. The Russian Market in Phnom Penh was better. I'm always surprised how much of NZ buildings remind me of Asia.

On the bus to Hamilton. But has stopped in Manukau which is south Auckland and has a large Maori and Pacific Islander population. The young men love to wear jerseys. I've seen a Laker jersey, a Boston jersey (he's also wearing a Chicago Bulls hat), and two Samoa jerseys.

Two days 'til Christmas! The Pohutukawa Tree is NZ's Christmas Tree. It's beautiful, quintessentially Kiwi, and the symbol of summer.

The pohutukawa tree (Metrosideros excelsa) with its crimson flower has become an established part of the New Zealand Christmas tradition.

This is the view from the walkway connecting my building to the mall across the way. What you cannot see is all the sailboats. What you cannot hear is all the cruise ship horns. It's tourist season everybody! I see more and more backpacks every day and hear more and more German accents.

Watching Vodafone Music Awards (Vodafone is a major phone company here). Lorde just won people's choice and said "this is for the people" and told a story about how people at Chapel Bar gave her a standing ovation and chased her down the street. She is only 16. What the F was she doing in a bar on Ponsonby?! Tsk! Tsk! :)

Not a light scene...but that is why I am posting it. They take their advertisements very seriously here. This is about what happens when you get into a crash because you are speeding.

It's hard out as the Kiwis would say...
