The Ruapehu Mountaineer is a premium steam-hauled rail experience through the Central North Island, combining classic heritage rail travel with time in the alpine environment of Mt Ruapehu.

The journey travels from the lower North Island through the Kapiti Coast and Manawatū, across the spectacular Mangaweka viaducts, before arriving at the mountains. From there, passengers head up to Whakapapa Village to enjoy time on the mountain before returning to the train for the trip home.

Here you’ll find updates, trip information, photos, and behind the scenes content as we prepare for and operate these journeys.
