Bikepacking trip 2022 - mission failed

Oh well, it’s been a long time since our bikepacking trip and we haven’t posted anything about it yet 😁.

It was hard and we knew it from the beginning. Half of the first day we just walked by the bikes climbing steeply up in quite hard terrain. It was super slow and the bikes with all the stuff on and food for next 5 days made it even harder. Suddenly it started raining and we still needed to climb up with about 1000 m accent. Lovely 😅.

Rain is not too bad unless you end up high in mountains, a bit soaked and covered with fog. Then wind appears and not too bad condition changes into super freezing time of your life… did I mentioned we had run out of drinking water? 😀

Let’s be strong and go another 8 km to the closest lake to pinch our tent up… still climbing up “hike-a-bike”.

Once we reached the first water, we pinched up the tent with totally frozen fingers. We made a dinner and immediately hid away from the crazy typical mountain weather conditions.

What would be a story about if something even worse didn’t happen? So we were happily trying to warm up again when strong but quick hail surprised us 🙈. I just didn’t have any more energy to think about our tent struggling with hail and wind.

We survived, don’t worry 😀. Even though it was just 1 deg.C in the night… The next morning we saw the remaining hailstones in front of the tent’s door 🥶. However, injuries from the past showed up again and it made a decision about ending the trip.

Mission failed.

We were a bit disappointed but we didn’t give up so easily. There was still a ling ride back to the beginning after two whole crazy days we made about 100 km in total with 2000 m up and also down 💪.

Just two days but more adventurous experience than ever 😅. The rest of our holiday we explored by our car, spending time with fishing, hiking and other activities. Pictures are coming soon.

🚴 🏔
Alright. If the last year was fun, let’s take this year really serious. Christmas is over and we can’t wait for another bikepacking trip! 🥳

- more than 700 km (only… compared to the last year)
- lovely 12225 m ascent ⬆️ (if you don’t feel that sarcasm then trust me it’s really there)
- the 1 km… oh well, some people say you can’t get to Doubtful Sound… actually, you can… but there is 1 km… one kilometre or real hell (I’m using words of other bikers who have done it 😂)
- a lot of fun, rain and sandflies
- we might get some sun 😂 (such a great joke in Fiordland)
- ⛄️ we might have some snow ❄️ 🙈 - current forecast says that
