Understanding Your Airspeed Indicator (ASI)
Your airspeed indicator is one of the most critical instruments in the cockpit—and it all comes down to pressure.
How it works:
The ASI compares:
• Pitot pressure (ram air from the pitot tube)
• Static pressure (ambient air from the static port)
The difference between these two pressures gives you your indicated airspeed.
What happens with a blockage?
If the pitot tube becomes blocked while the drain hole is also blocked, the system traps pressure—and your ASI can start giving false readings.
In a climb:
• Static pressure decreases
• Trapped pitot pressure stays higher
ASI shows increasing airspeed (even if you’re not accelerating)
In a descent:
• Static pressure increases
• Pressure difference decreases
ASI shows decreasing airspeed
Why this matters:
Incorrect airspeed indications can lead to dangerous decisions, especially during climb, descent, or approach.
Always include pitot-static checks in your preflight—because in aviation, accurate information = safe
