URGENT UPDATE FOR TOLAGA BAY & EAST COAST COMMUNITIES

This is an urgent message from Tairฤwhiti Civil Defence Emergency Management.

Severe weather warnings are in effect for the Gisborne region, with heavy rain expected to continue through tonight. Red-level rain warnings north of Tolaga Bay signal dangerous conditions, including flooding, slips, and rapidly rising river levels. There is a real threat to life in low-lying areas and along river systems.

Residents in Tolaga Bay, Wharekaka, Mangatuna, Hikuwai and other flood-prone zones are being asked to prepare to evacuate before nightfall. Do not wait until conditions worsen โ€” gather your essential items and move to higher ground or designated evacuation centres now.

Check local Civil Defence updates via radio, the Antenno app or council social media. If you feel unsafe at any time, evacuate immediately.

Take this warning seriously โ€” your safety comes first.
Issued by Tairฤwhiti Civil Defence.
