Staying safe around electricity starts with knowing what to look out for. ⚡

Power lines, power boxes and electrical equipment are part of everyday life, but they can be dangerous if they’re not treated with care.

A few simple reminders:

⚡ Treat all power lines as live at all times.
⚡ Stay well away from fallen power lines and electrical worksites.
⚡ Never climb on, sit on, kick or poke inside a power box.
⚡ Don’t throw anything into or near power lines.
⚡ Before climbing or trimming trees, look up and check for power lines.

And if you spot an unsecured power box, damaged panel cover or lid, or low-hanging power line, report it to Firstlight Network on 0800 206 207 so it can be made safe.

When it comes to electricity, look up, stay back and treat it with care and respect.

🚁 Our pole top photography survey will kick off next week. From October to December, we’ll be using a low-flying helicopter to photograph power poles across the Tairāwhiti and Wairoa districts.

⚡What an honour to kōrero all things electricity at the Electrify Tairāwhiti Business event last week at Gisborne’s Midway Surf Rescue Community Hub.⚡

Stuart Dickson (pictured far right), GM Customer and representing our new owners, Powerco, shared the floor with Mike Casey, Rewiring Aotearoa, Paul Bull and Amy Lobb from EECA (Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority) and Kirsten Corson, Chair of Drive Electric to discuss the opportunities for electrification for the region.

There was a strong turn-out to the event across commercial sectors including small-to-medium sized businesses, farmers, iwi development, and supported by Trust Tairāwhiti, Tairāwhiti Environment Centre, Gisborne Chamber of Commerce and MyImprint.
Speakers explored what the energy transition means for Tairāwhiti businesses, from operating costs and investment decisions, to transport, energy efficiency, new technology, network capacity and resilience.

Stuart Dickson shared a regional network perspective following Powerco's recent purchase of Firstlight Network. He discussed changing energy needs across Tairāwhiti and the importance of planning ahead, encouraging businesses considering major electrical upgrades, solar generation or EV charging to engage with Powerco early.

Thank you to all guests who attended and for local energy navigator, Harley Dibble, for taking the lead on this initiative and such a critical, enabling discussion for the region. Ka rawe!

💥It's inspiring to learn about community energy initiatives right here in Tairāwhiti.💥
Community members, council, hapū, marae representatives, thought leaders and representatives from our new owners, Powerco, met in Gisborne last week for a Community Energy Network gathering. This event brought people together to learn, share local experiences and start the kōrero about renewable energy projects, healthier homes and potential opportunities for Tairāwhiti.

These events have previously taken place in Taranaki and Canterbury thanks to the support of Powerco and Orion NZ Ltd, with the aim of enabling communities to build their understanding of the energy sector and upskill locals.

Each community and region location is unique, so it was great to have robust feedback from those attending the Gisborne event, about what would work best in our region and to shape next steps. Special thanks to Gareth Cartwright from the Community Energy Network for visiting, and Sam Elder and Bill Heaps as subject matter experts, plus the awesome mahi of local facilitators Harley, Renee and Jared! 💚

Some of our team went up the coast on Saturday to Whakarua Park to watch Ngāti Porou East Coast Hamoterangi take on King Country Trail Blazers.

While the result didn’t quite go our way this time, there was excellent support from the sidelines for the wahine and lots of supporters watching both women’s and men’s games.

We had a great time meeting people and enjoying the atmosphere (luckily the rain stayed away) so thank you to the union for the warm welcome. There’s something very special about grassroots rugby, it’s much more than what happens on the field, it’s about community, connection and getting behind your team.

Have you got a no-power plan?
Power outages can happen for a range of reasons, so it’s a good idea to think ahead about what you and your household would need if the power went off, even for a few hours.
A few simple things to have ready:
📱 Charge your devices and keep a power bank handy.
🔦 Keep a torch and spare batteries somewhere easy to find.
🫗 Have some emergency water available, including enough for your pets.
🔥 Think about how you’d prepare food without power - a BBQ or camping stove can be useful.
💊 If you rely on electricity for medical equipment, make sure your backup plan is up to date.
🔌 Protect sensitive electronics with surge protection.
🚗 Know how to manually open your garage door if the power is out.
🏠 Keep your emergency supplies together so you can easily find what you need.

A little preparation now can make an outage much easier to manage. 💙
And remember: if you see a fallen or damaged power line, stay well clear and report it to us. ⚡
