Livestock transport declaration forms available

Livestock transporters are being fined for moving un-tagged cattle and deer, with 1 in 3 fines being issued to transport operators rather than the people actually in control of the animals.

You can protect yourself by insisting that stock owners complete a Declaration to Livestock Transporter form – available online or by ordering a booklet from Transporting New Zealand. Email [email protected] to request your free booklet today.

Let's Talk Fuel Adjustment Factor (FAF or Fuel Levy) ⛽💲

After great feedback around our last post and discussions over the past couple of weeks I have realised that more education is needed around what "FAF" is and how it is calculated.

What is FAF?
FAF is a surcharge, generally a percentage attached to transport or freight rates to help mitigate fluctuating fuel costs. Many transport companies introduced using a FAF during Covid when fuel prices were volatile, much like they are currently with the Middle East conflict.

The answer is there is no one-size-fits-all approach to how fuel adjustments or levies are calculated.

How is it calculated?
Using a same sourced published method eg. MBIE data, pump price or fuel card price. The same source is generally used each period of calculation for transparency and fairness. An average may be taken over a period of time. FAF should move up and down with price changes.

Why is XX Company charging me 10% FAF and BB Company is charging me 20% FAF?
This can depend on a number of factors:
-When their base rates were originally set
-When they introduced using a FAF in their pricing mechanism
-What cost component or percentage of the companies total overheads is fuel

With many emails being sent by carriers and social media comments circulating around FAF discrepancies please remember that methodology will change between companies because of multiple reasons, some mentioned above.
Let's hope this conflict ends soon 🤞

Disclaimer: No AI was used in the content of this post. This is purely an opinion piece of Beale Trucking and used to highlight the differences that may be seen in FAF calculations.
