Not the best day for it to be sure; but it was great to see Mike’s family and the few hardy friends at Hindon today as DRL dedicated a seat to the memory of Mike Lynch. Mikes passing was very sudden; and the DRL team wanted to pay their respects to such a good person who sadly went well before his time. We decided that rather than a plaque on a stone; this was a more fitting tribute and thanks to a fellow work mate and true friend.

Hi. It has taken a wee while; but Dunedin Railways will be unveiling a bespoke park bench dedicated to Mike Lynch and this service, not only to Dunedin Railways but New Zealand rail in general.

He was a genuine New Zealand Railwayman; and a true friend to us all.

The Park bench will be unveiled while the Inlander is at Hindon on the 7th August. All family and friends are welcome to join Dunedin Railways on the day.

EWW33 heading to BR43 ML carrying a crane chassis. This Rail Heritage Trust wagon built in 1945 is still the highest capacity wagon on the network with an 14t axle load. Good to see it in action. 😊

It has been a very busy time for the DRL team over the last few months, while we moved out of the Cumberland St Loco Depot: this has been the hub of our maintenance activities for many years. Though a sad time, it will open up opportunities for a new and exciting future, and although there will still be some hardship to begin with; I am confident we will look back at this in the near future and see it as a positive move. On behalf of DRL I would like to say a big thanks to our contractors for their help, and KiwiRail who have understood how difficult this task has been and been very respectful & supportive. The biggest praise goes to the DRL team itself, who have shown great strength & resilience to work through this move, remaining very positive throughout. With the relocation now complete, I am going to post some videos and pic’s over this week showing some of the latter highlights. This first video is from the 28th Feb when we moved 8 assets by road out of the Dunedin Yard in one day. Thanks to Jason Murdoch for the clip.

Today we have lost a very special friend and co-worker. Mike Lynch is the definition of the classic NZ railway man; passionate in all things associated with rail, whether that was driving, obviously his No. 1 passion, but also working with others to pass on his vast skills and knowledge. He was an excellent teacher, coach and mentor; calm and methodical in all things. There are so many over the years that have learned from Mike, including myself.
There is nothing Mike wouldn’t do to help. He was always the first to put his hand up and his hard-working positive attitude was his hallmark, and an example to be lived up to by others.
You could not meet a more honest, reliable, down to earth friend. The help Mike has been while Dunedin Railways has been going through tough times was invaluable; on the train, behind the scenes organizing and preparing or assisting with maintenance at the workshop or out with the track gang. Mike would always do what he could to help. His love and belief in Dunedin Railways was unwavering. It is at these times you always wish you had said more to say thanks at the time.
It is so hard to comprehend that the man who was so full of life and driving Dunedin Railways two passenger trains on the 31st Dec is no longer with us anymore. I will miss Mike immensely. I could always rely on Mike knowing the latest sports score, and we had many passionate talks round the smoko table on the latest news and events. I am sure all his team mates at Dunedin Railways feels the same.
My heart really goes out to Jo and Mikes family. This is an unimaginable position to come to terms with, and please know that we are all thinking of you
