Today we have lost a very special friend and co-worker. Mike Lynch is the definition of the classic NZ railway man; passionate in all things associated with rail, whether that was driving, obviously his No. 1 passion, but also working with others to pass on his vast skills and knowledge. He was an excellent teacher, coach and mentor; calm and methodical in all things. There are so many over the years that have learned from Mike, including myself.
There is nothing Mike wouldnβt do to help. He was always the first to put his hand up and his hard-working positive attitude was his hallmark, and an example to be lived up to by others.
You could not meet a more honest, reliable, down to earth friend. The help Mike has been while Dunedin Railways has been going through tough times was invaluable; on the train, behind the scenes organizing and preparing or assisting with maintenance at the workshop or out with the track gang. Mike would always do what he could to help. His love and belief in Dunedin Railways was unwavering. It is at these times you always wish you had said more to say thanks at the time.
It is so hard to comprehend that the man who was so full of life and driving Dunedin Railways two passenger trains on the 31st Dec is no longer with us anymore. I will miss Mike immensely. I could always rely on Mike knowing the latest sports score, and we had many passionate talks round the smoko table on the latest news and events. I am sure all his team mates at Dunedin Railways feels the same.
My heart really goes out to Jo and Mikes family. This is an unimaginable position to come to terms with, and please know that we are all thinking of you
