If I can see a free solo Swan Lake performance but can't get a mandatory covid test due to 1) over capacity at all sites or 2) sites closing due to imminent street protests - found this out while traipsing around in 33 degree heat - then I must be in Melbourne. Good to be home? No, not yet.

Of course when the weather is abysmal there's nothing like A HOUSE coming torward you on a narrow alpine road.

On return to the 'mainland', I moved around the south coast heading easterly and through The Catlins. Again, more stunning country - craggy coastlines, forests-to-the-sea, winds you would not believe and loads of history and stories.

Kiwis are so polite.  They knock down a fence in protest, but promptly put it back up again.
